Title: New front discs.
Post by: Big_Al on 18 May 2011, 21:26:55
hi guys just a quick question,    When replacing front discs & pads on facelift models, do the sensors need replacing as well. Or do you just use the existing ones?

Looked on the maintenance guide - but not sure :-/ :-/

Car is 2000 (W)   3.0 elite

TIA        Al :y :y :y

If you get them out intact .. re-use ... if they break .. they need replacing ... sounds simple .... but they break very easily .. :)

and on a facelift there is only one sensor IIRC ... :)

F/L from 2001 onwards has only one i believe. Mine's a f/l but a 2000 model the same as yours but has two sensors. Sensors available on ebay cheap enough

For the agro involved in trying to remove the original intact you are better of factoring in the extra £10 or so for a new sensor everytime you fit new pads.

I have got to the point where I have removed mine completly as I have 2 and an extra £20 per pad change starts getting abit silly.

My theory nows is that I replace my front pads every 10k miles partly due to my driving style/being an auto and my wish not to be fitting new discs more than once a year.

How do we remove them then Amba ?  I'm OK with that but don't want any warning or lights coming up. :-/ :-/

Very easy mate.... just cut the wire (after the connection plug) then tape the two wires together. Kills the warning on the dash. Remember to check the pads every six months or so :y

They usually accept returns unused/un opened. Might be worth checking.

I usually gently knock the sensor stud out of the pad with a suitably sized punch/nail/drill bit/whatever... Then if not broken or worn through, re fit, then return the unused new sensors.

Levering on the cream/white colored porcelain(?) part is a sure way to bust them ime.

OK fellas,  doing change on Saturday morning - so -  as local stealer is only 10 mins away - will  remove old discs & see if I can get existing sensors out undamaged.  If not go & get a new pair. :y

You've convinced me they should be fitted & not removed ;) ;)

Al....worth checking to see if you have 1 fitted to each front side or just 1 as being F/L they teneded only to have a single sensor.

I am not suggetsing anything which is a "bodge or detrimental"it,s just as I tend to cahnge the front pads normally 3 times a year due to mileage I drive they stating adding a fair bit of cash to a standard brake pad refit.

They do come out as suggested with a small punch through the center hole but from my last experience you go to refit the sensor in the pad and just when you think it has reseated the white porcelain body falls apart. Then the pads need removing again avaoiding copperslip everywhere just to get the broken pin out.

Cut the wires and rejoin....thats might method now and replace every 10k .

Doubtful, 2.2 introduced late `99 two sensors, post `01, one sensor. Most probably a cost-cutting exercise

2001 model year was when they changed to 1 sensor.

Sensors are about £7+VAT trade from dealer.

If the car has it, it has to work imho...  ...not that I am quite as bad as LazyCripple and GayBoy...
