Title: Day Running Lights
Post by: car-nut on 19 May 2011, 02:39:56
I have bought a pair of white LED strips which are not E marked so wont pass an mot connected, however I do want to wire them up so they come on when I start the car automatically.

Anyone know what I can wire these to, to get them to come on with the ignition? And if so can you give instructions for dummies please lol

Factory fitted day light LED's are  wired on a seperate system to the lights as they are on without any rear lights coming on. Which is how I want to run these but if it comes to it I will wire them onto the sidelights.

Just pick up the 12 volts + from a live ignition feed and fit an inline fuse.Several options within the triangular fuse box by the battery,or failing that pick up the feed from the main fuse board under the steering wheel and run it to the engine bay fuse box and create a direct feed to each light from there then you will have easier access if you need to change fuses.

Curious though why you would want them as the general consensus is unless they are factory fitted to say within the headlights they tend to look a bit strange...but it is obviously an individual taste thing at the end of the day.

Let us all know where you finally decided to mount the lights.

The reason behind wanting them on my car is not so much style but safety. As where I live is life or death getting on and off where my car is parked and I noticed a difference about people noticing my Galaxy more with the day lights. I ended up fitting them on the galaxy with a separate switch. But the LED strips will be mounted directly below the fog lights on the Omega.

I will re-read the info on the wiring tomorrow when I am more awake lol.

Thanks for the tips!

If they are not Emarked the Boys in Blue or VOSA can still tug you for having them fitted, you then have the problem of removing them at the side of the road

Just something to keep in mind

Not confirmed.

Road Vehicle Lighting Regs currently state "There is no requirement relating to an optional dim-dip device or an optional running lamp"

so, legally, they could be 3000W HiDs, as long as you don't dazzle anyone

Didn't work for me last night when Mr Porsche nearly ploughed into the front end of my car.

I must have wired the invisibility cloak up to the headlight switch accidentally..

But if the traffic fuzz think its dazzling, they can still make you take it off, or just PG9 the car!  :( :(

If they can't see your headlights I think you cannot do anything.

Indeed!

Well.. except an emergency stop (which is precisely what I did ;D)
