Title: insurance
Post by: theowletman on 28 January 2008, 22:46:00
Just got a quote from Norwich Unions Pay as You Drive policy, they fit a tracker ( FOC ) and bill you monthly, give it a go, the quote was half what I pay now.

Sounds interesting, particularly with spare / extra cars.
Did a check of that compare.com? a couple of nights age for SWMBO.  Galant V624Valve, been with elephant for years Elephant a touch over £400.00, not an exact comparison so I will be in touch with Elephant, More Than £148.00. They have got My dog, they have got my house, looks like they will be getting the cars!
 :) :) :)

Wild, never heard of that!  Could be tempting in some cases.  Don't use it for a heist or to shuttle between 2 wives though!  ;) ;D

I'd want to know who they sell the data to  :o  Not that it could incriminate me or anything  :-X

.. and is there a cap on what they could charge in a month or can they arbitrarily charge what they like?

I can do better than that. I've got a GPS simulator sitting on my bench at the moment (long story). It's loaded with a scenario to simulate someone standing in the middle of Tokyo in the year 2002 at the moment. That'd confuse 'em!

I am just getting a quote off the pay as you drive people as i type they put the group of the car up by one group because mine is LPG :(

Lets see if they beat my new Elephant price of £290 fully comp.

i do around 4000  a year.

LOL They just worked me out at 4000 miles at £292 a year and i do do more than 4000 it was just a benchmark.

So Elephant still beat them by 2 pounds

Sounds like a good idea in theory (I do very little mileage these days) but I'm not the least bit comfortable with my insurance company knowing when, where, and how fast I'm driving every time I go somewhere in the car.

I'm paying more than that for 5k per year as of my last renewal (November). Might be at least partly to do with having a group 20 car though ::).

Postcode makes a big difference in my experience too.

I had a post on here about insurance as i was not pleased i was paying £320 3rd party and for no reason the next year they put it upto £350 still 3rd party i phoned up to complain and they knocked 10% off so i asked how much for full comp and it was £560 so with the advice of people on here i used confused.com and it found me a quote at elephant for £290 i dont have to tell you how quick i canceled with my insurance company and moved to Elephant

I only pay just a tad over £290.00 for fully comp with limited miles of no more than 5000 a year  :)

I'd never heard of this scheme until a newly passed driver bought a car off me and mentioned it, she was 18 and bought a 51 Corsa, if she sticks to the mileage and off peak use she will pay about £567 a year. not bad. My own quote was £178, but I take the car to Spain at least once a year and they couldn't be accurate about the cost of that. Sticking wih esure until October, £277 F.Comp.Might help younger drivers as long as they leave Halfords car park before 10pm.

yeah i can see the benifits, especially for young drivers, its just that being an old cynic i do worry where it will lead in the long term.ie the politicians would love to get hold of it.they could know where we all are all the time, fit speed limiters and god knows what else

You can guarantee that the first thing they'll do if you have an accident is look at the data.... One hopes that they wouldn't put too much weight on  a very limited view of what was going on.

Can they track the car if it's reported stolen?

Not sure Kevin, the RAC fit it in 30 mins, presumably it will have a system which will tell NU if it has been disconnected, bit like a tag on a villain, don't know how it will react if the car battery goes flat. I agree it is probably a step towards Big Brother, but with cameras countrywide and ANPR in the few plod mobiles that are still left we are nearly there anyway. Can't decide if it is good or bad thing, it helped track the movements of the crims after the WPC was shot at the Bradford travel agents, it is used covertly against terrorism and if it helps solve serious crime so be it, it should not be used for petty things though, but then again nothing seems petty about car offences. I am a floating voter on this issue.

Yeah, me too. I guess it has a GPS and a GSM link to the outside world. If they became commonplace it would deter a lot of car crime, I guess, so some good could come out of it. :-/
