Thinking I had a valve problem I took the advice posted here and got an oil change...... Now the place I had the oil change 'in and out' cost a fortune, don't ask.......Anyway the bloke came over and said there is a knock from the bottom end.....OK oil change done, and thinking bottom end off to Halfords and in with a can of Wynns.... ::) ::)
Went on a visit and thought these noises are not the bottom end, it has been a long time but I know what it sounds like and this did not sound like the shells.... :-/ :-/
Took it to my local independent, intake of breath later, that's not right is it....... ::) ::)
Noise is a rotary noisy rattle type of noise with the odd bigger tap...........Anyway, does this sound like a water pump failing? cam belts were done in February but not sure about the pump...... ::) ::) ::)
It certainly sounds bearing type and not the alternator or ac cos he took the belt off for a quick check..... Car in the garage for investigation and repair AGAIN :'( :'( and MOT as it is nearly due....... :)

Water pump bolts too long? ..... If the water pump was done of course?
Should add on the v6's the flange the pulley bolts to varies according to make, if thinner the bolts protrude through the back and foul the casting. Not sure if this applies to the 4 pot wp?
And of course there's the question did the previous garage do the work correctly? When did the noise start?

Possible it's a failing cam belt tensioner pulley? Might be worth having the cover off for a look?
Take the aux belt off first for a quick try though. Could be an ancillary..
.. but then it's impossible to diagnose noises by internet.

Shouldn't be if they were new in febuary,if the water pump wasn't changed thats where I'd be looking first

They can make quite a racket when the bearing gives up and its not always accompanied by a leak

If the pump wasn't changed then the tensioner & pulleys may not have been either? Certainly worth scrutinising the paperwork/checking with the garage to be sure! And Mike, the next time you need an oil change please let me know before having your eyes taken out again! ::) ;D ;)

Thanks Phil, but it was a last minute urgent job, anyway 'In and Out' in Stockton will not get any more of my custom as they suggested the big ends had gone, I have previous experience of this in the distant past so know what they sound like...... ::) ::)
Twas the water pump... :y :y
