Post by: mikeh on 14 June 2011, 20:51:21
Hi,
Can someone please confirm the socket size for the rear shock absorber lower mounting bolt.
Thanks,
Mike.

Depends if the bolt has ever been changed I reckon... I thought it was either 18/19mm, as confirmed by the previous 2 posts ::)

Nope...mine is original and both sides are 18mm,well they were when I replaced both rear shocks few weeks ago.

Deffo not 18/19 as my largest socket (19) is too small.
Have just put adjustable wrench on it and it looks like its a 21. Maintenance guide for rear shocks says it maybe a 22. Needed to be sure as I'll need to buy the socket tomorrow as I'm replacing broken coil spring. It is still the original shock absorber.
Thanks for your replies.

From new miggys were 18mm on all models. Aftermarket (non VX) ones where fitted are usually 19.
While you are changing the spring - I hope that it is both of them it would be wise to replace the shocks too. Like everything else fitted in pairs - they all do the same amount of work over their lifetimes.
I am doing mine today too.

21mm is the size. Shocks are original - I've owned the car from almost new (ex demo) and can still read the GM markings.
Lowered exhaust and diff and old springs came out very easily.
