As above really when hoofing it in sport mode get a whistling noise at top of the revs, noise seems to come from the front of the car.
Definately more of a whislte than a screach.
02 2.6 elite.
Any ideas?
TIA

Air leak?
-
That's exactly what it sounds like, any ideas where to start looking? only does it at the top end of the rev range.
-
My first thought was an Air Leak, but would that not throw a fault code and EML?
-
plenum o-rings, bagpipes, icv pipework. anywhere really ;D
-
No codes showing, will be having the plenum off for cam cover gaskets / breather work shortly so will have a good rumage. Ta for suggestions.
-
car in bits now ready for cam cover gaskets due in on thur. When i took plenum off the really small pipe with a 90 deg rubber on the end under throttle bodies was detatched. Wonder if that was the cause of the whistle.
Will no doubt find out on friday when it's all back together.
-
Check the little rubber o-ring with the little loop on which seals the long airbox on the plenum where it plugs into the plenum...the loop part often splits...some light grease will help the new one not to split when putting it back...only a couple of quid from Vaux to replace :y

obviously elves have sneaked in and fitted a turbo, i cant understand why no-ones thought of this, and im no mechanic.
-
ummmmmm turbo mig 8-)
-
What sort if whistle? Kettle whistle? Wizzing whistle? Wheezy whistle?
-
as much as the turbo thing was a joke it did actually sound like a turbo spooling up. If i had to choose from your descriptions i'd go for kettle. Sounds like wind noise but definately not as it was not present unless gunning it in sport mode.
-
The dual-ram system kicks in at specific rpm/torque-loading.......might the marked-change in sound/roar of that, be what you`re hearing (at least in part)? :-/
-
On the above theory could the non connected pipe be to the multiram and as its not connected you can hear it leaking air when it cuts in?
-
It would be flat as a pancake though, until 4 k or vice versa depending which one.

And how loud? Do you feel the need to turn off the climate control to hear it better?
I'm thinking it's just the cam wheels and associated belt wering tbh.

Ring any bells?
-
No, when I heard it it was quite lound I had sunroof open and seemed to hear noise through roof.
Won't be driving it again until friday when I've put the cam covers back on, so will update then.
There was no impact on performance, and it seems a bit of a coincidence that there was a pipe disconnected.
-
Well, been out for a drive and the whistling noise has gone, so it must have been that little pipe.
What does it do?

I need to own a pair of ears like yours.
If you can hear the 'whistle' from a small vac pipe over the 'full beans rant' of a V6 then I doff my cap to you Sir! :y
-
goes to the rear multiram iirc. :-/

It wasn't quiet, when I first heard it I had sunroof open too. thought it was wind noise at first, but still there with roof shut and only present when at top of revs.
Only other thing I suppose is that something was else was not properly fitted as all I've done is cam cover gaskets and breather cleaning.
Definately no whistle when I took it out and gave it the beanz.
