Title: Power Steering Pump (3.0 Elite)
Post by: Mr Skrunts on 17 June 2011, 11:33:48
Went out and had a bit of fun the other night to see how the Elite really does handle.  Had a really good spirited drive accross some twisty but very open countryside and a really had some fun with the car even though it does not handle as well as my GLS, then went off and had had a bit of a drifting sesion in a private parking areafollowed by a couple of really good dohnuts.

Sadly after the donhnuts my steering went heaving as if the belt had come off.  Checked the warning lights and all was well, temp diddnt rise at all.  As I drove the steering got light as if it were normal. Seems it's just heavy on tickover.

Had the engine at full revs whilst dohnutting so have I possibbly done any damage to an air/vacum pipe that might cause the problem at tickover.  Or is there any form of sensor on the system that may be an issue.

Checked it for fluid, no probs there.  other thing is tickover its self, sure it used to be 600 rpm now looks arrounf 500/500 rpm, couls it simply be low tickover (when revs raise PS is OK) and if so can I raise it say 100 revs withouth affecting any other settings on the engine.

Normally when the PAS is revs dependant it is 'cos the pump is on the way out, maybe your spirited driving just killed it off.
Replacing the pump easy enough.  :y

Is that air con on or off ??  Air con (climate) on raises rpm by about 100-150  .. might be enough to just drive the PS until you get it sorted properly ????

Good point, will try it and see if it drives easier.  :y
