Title: Automatic transmission - plastic ring
Post by: Peti on 20 June 2011, 09:34:56
There's this plastic ring I found broken into 3 pieces when removing the SMALLER sump of the automatic transmission :

Suppose I can buy a new one.
But then I just can't imagine WHERE does it come from.
Can anyone show me on this picture ?

thats the dreaded thrust washer - there is a post on replacing it in the maintenance section. check the index in my sig.  :y

you will need new gaskets, fluid and an uprated brass thrust washer.
box bits can be obtained from JPAT, fluid from opie oils.

Well, this looks everything but easy!
I thought I just buy a new one and click it to its place using 2 fingers  :)

There's a guy round here will do that sort of job for £200 plus parts.

Ime you need a local garage with auto box experience. Not an auto box only specialist as such, they tend to take the pesh a little.

It can be done on the drive though, apparently.  :-/

Lately, when leaving the garage(i.e. when everything was cold) , it took the transmission unit quite a few meters to change from gear 1 to gear 2.

Do you think that plastic ring is to blame for that ?

Do I take a big risk if I do NOT replace it for a while ?

Standard operation, it does that when cold to get the engine to warm up a little quicker.

That sounds fine, but do you think it is a big risk NOT to replace that plastic ring immediately ?
