This is EXACTLY the problem I'm having. i.e. flahing lights, etc on gear lever. I've just had it diagnosed this morning as a faulty gear selector switch. (£250 + VAT) :'(
I'm interested to read that maybe its not faulty and just needs cleaned :P
Can you give some advice? Do I have to lower gear box and take off or is there shortcuts?

Lol clean it and reset the position of it.
Its easy to remvoe, a couplf of bolts and a nut as its attached to the side of the gearbox (passenger side)
Easy to take apart to and clean.

The last picture shows how you align the switch before tightening up the bolts (note, this should be doen once its on the box, the picture was taken like this just for clarity)

But when you clean it use proper switch cleaner which you can get from Maplin
Do not use WD 40!!

Thnks everyone for the advice. Unfortunately I never took the advice of the last post and 3 days later still have the burn to prove it! :'(
Also unfortunate is that it made no difference!! >:( The only thing I was slightly confused with is the positioning of the switch before tightening the bolts. I had the car in neutral and put the switch back into the cover in the same position that I removed. Is that right?
Anyway, where does this leave me? I am know wondering if its even the selector switch thats to blame!!

Deffo the switch. Did you align it as in Mark`s third photo :question

Gearbox in neutral.
Twist the switch body (bolts loose) until you can insert an allen key in the alignment slots as shown in the last pic
Tighten the bolts.
To set the linkage.
Set selector lever to "P" and ensure that the parking lock is engaged. Loosen the fastening bolt on the linkage. Press the selector lever on the side of the gearbox rearwards to the stop point (as far as it will go!). Tighten the bolt.
I would set the linkage before the switch.

Are you talking about the lights all being on? also did you ensure you cleaned inside the switch (track & contacts) with 'switch cleaner'? were there any contacts missing, mine had 2 missing and they weren't there when I took it to pieces! Gremlins :)

i recall somebody else had a similar problem a while back, turned out the nylon part that goes on the selector shaft [the hole] was cracked causing it to play silly buggers, worth checking :y

1. Put the car in neutral.
2. Remove the selector lever from the mode switch.
3. Remove the cover.
4. Loosen the two 10 mm. mounting screws.
5. By rotating the mode switch you can line up the slot in the mode switch housing with the selector shaft bushing.
6. Insert a 2,4 mm punch (3/32 in) in the slot.
7. Tighten the two 10 mm. screws.

Using a multi meter.
1. Put the car in neutral.
2. Disconnect the mode switch connector. It’s located in front of the air filter box and it’s the biggest of the three you’ll find there. (black).
3. Connect a multi meter set to resistance between terminals 1 and 4.
4. Loosen the two mounting screws of the mode switch and find the range of electrical contact by turning the entire mode switch.
5. Then fix the mode switch to the middle of that range and tighten the two mounting screws.

My 2.2 is refusing to release the P lever lock even though the brake lights are working fine.
It started by being slow to release and then did not release a few times lately, meaning I had to manually push the locking tab out of the way, but this is now happening more regularly. Is worse in cold weather...
Can this be cleaned or does it need replacing?

Fit a new brake light switch! :y There's 2 sets of contacts in there so you can have working brake lights & still need a new switch. ;)

Fit a new brake light switch! :y There's 2 sets of contacts in there so you can have working brake lights & still need a new switch. ;)
Had the console/gaiter off to inspect-I think it is a lazy or worn lock actuator as the lock does not always move BACK into locking position when put into P position on selector; aswell as not always releasing.
Ideas? Link? Cost?
The "list" just keeps on and on and on and on-wishbones being done this weekend, had 4 tyres last week, tax at end of month, think I've got broken rattly rear springs, towbar electrics playing up, now this-after all the work I have done in the last three months, costing 000s. >:(
If it wasn't for OOF, this car would be LONG gone by now. Still tempting.

I have had a few conversations about the selector lock actuator and am now going over to see St. Wellung of the Dudley parish this weekend. Blessed art him ;D
Hopefully it is the brake light switch or can be resolved with switch cleaner or something ::)

welung666 had a good look at this today-many thanks to him-and lubricated the moving bits and added a laccy band to assist the return.
Seems to work fine-will update soon :y

My 2002 MV6 3.2 Omega Auto needs cleaning inside the auto gearbox selector switch but does not have enough space to access the 10mm selector switch fixing screws and to access the wiring connector (6" away). I also have 2 heat shields covering the wiring and selector switch with fixing screws that are unreachable. Can anyone suggest suggest a solution apart from dropping the gearbox as my Haynes manual suggests?
Alternatively is there anyone within sensible travelling distance of Manchester Airport who has experience of doing this job and who would be prepared to tackle fixing my selector switch?
