Title: Flat battery and key wont open door.
Post by: ted_one on 27 June 2011, 10:18:43
Came out this morning to do a bit of work on my 2000 3.0 MV6,battery is completely dead, tried the key in the lock, nothing >:( now I'm wondering what to do as this is an ex police car and I'm not to sure what 's been done to it during its previous life.Is it time to call out Green flag as this is the only point of access as unlike my 98' GLS I can get in through the boot or is there someone out there with a solution, any help would be much apreciated :y :y

I would say jack the car up and connect a battery charger between the positive terminal on the starter motor and the chassis / engine block. Let the battery charge for a few minutes and try again.

It should be possible to unlock the driver's door with the key, though it'll be very stiff.

.. Green Flag will probably use the LBC multi-purpose entry tool. ::)

I had this once and turned the key to the right and lifted the handle - as Jimbob said the door pin may not go up

Just Jack up and connect another battery across  starter and chassis, I used my small golf trolley battery

I've done plenty of Green Flag jobs, as well as plenty of other breakdown providers, and there is no way I'd be using a brick or any other similar 'tool', no matter what the customer says.signs/agrees to.

If you're stupid enough to break something in that manner, just do it yourself.

I'll add my agreement with powering the car up with another battery and some fiddling with the starter connection. You don't need much power to unlock the door. I've done this on a Renault with a bit of coat hanger wrapped in insualting tape(except for the ends!) touching the starter terminal and the power provided by a pretty flat boos pack.

if the car won't open via the driver's door lock with the key (it should go with force though) as you have a boot you can open with the key you also have the option of powering up the car via your boot light. You don't need to crawl under a car or maul about with a jack.  ;) ;)

On a 1998 2.0l car are you not able to open it with a steel rule and a coat hanger....... :-X ;) ;) If calling out Green Flag they should know how to do this... :y

The bit about the green flag brick option was a joke ! I cant see any reason to put the window in either, although I do apreciate all the help and tips offered but it ain't happening so in the morning I'm going to give them a call as this happened once before about a year ago but with the engine running and they did a pretty good job by gently working wedges into the drivers door and gradually getting enough access to release the locked door,he did a great job with only minor paint damage which was a small price to pay  :y
