Title: What's this? Hole in pipe problem!
Post by: Kate on 29 June 2011, 13:44:19
Hi Everyone!

I've got a hole in a pipe at the front.  Does anyone know what this part is and what problems it might cause?

My mig has developed a coolant leak. Could this be related?

Many thanks! :-* :-* :-* :y

That's the feed to the SAI (secondary air injection) system. The good news is it's nothing critical as it's purely an emissions control device which won't affect normal running of the car. Having said that, there should be a non-return valve that prevents hot exhaust gases getting into that hose and its' failure may have caused the hose to melt.

To be honest, the whole system can be removed as it makes no odds to the running of the engine or MOT emissions. That's probably what I'd do in your shoes, although you could replace the pipe, of course. If you do, have a feel around the split with the engine running to see if you can feel exhaust gases "chuffing" out of the hole, as that would indicate that perhaps the non return valve has failed.
