Well it might start if you put some oil in the sump ;D

Good point. I should know, actually. I started a car once with no oil... I was changing the oil, and left it to drain, then forgot all about it, went into the car started it... it only ran for a few seconds before I realised what I've done and switched off the engine, but I kept the car for a few years afterwards and had no problems with it...
So yes they do run without oil. For a while, anyway....

twice now, tractor has decided to wet itself and dump 6.5l of oil everywhere whilst running.....
