Title: Air Lock part 2,
Post by: tooleater on 05 July 2011, 20:52:51
Saga continues with water boiling out over expansion tank in mid to high 90s on tick over, what may be an Air lock.took some good advice from you guys about, flushing and reverse flushing heater matrix, the air from my vents is roasting,as 4 removing flow and return hoses, they wouldnt budge. >:(
Is there any other way of filling cooling system, the fans dont come in at all now, water not circulating,im thinking Thermo stuck.Any thoughts Guys would be Great :y
Cheers John

Is the car overheating, when left ticking over with the header cap on?

Are you losing water?

How did you flush the matrix without removing the hoses?  :-/

It cannot be the head gaskets if your heaters are hot because they are the first thing to go cold.
Water circulates by being pushed around by the water pump. If this is not working then the water will heat but will not be pushed arounf the cooling system to be cooled by the radiator.
You can test this by hand revving the engine with the filler cap removed and watching to see if the water level is pulled down when you increase the revs, then rise again when you let it tickover.
Ok, if the heaters vents are 'roasting hot' then it is obviously not the heater matrix or they would not be 'roasting'. It is beginning to look like it may be the thermostat being stuck but they usually jam open so as not to restrict any flow as a safety factor. As its such a bitch to do try everything else first.

You can test the thermostat action by starting from cold and holkding the top radiator hose until you feel heat. If the heat is slow to build up in it (not just by your hand heat) then it is the thermostat either jammed open or missing. If there is a sudden burst of high heat then the thermostat is working correctly and has opened when it has reached working temperature.
I take it that the radiator cooling fans are coming on and off as they should? If not it will soon overheat until you start to drive it when the wind will do the radiator cooling instead. When you stop moving the heat will again rapidly build up.
What exactly have you checked? More information is needed to be of help m8.... ;)

Have you got the cap on?  :-/ or is it faulty? It's a pressurized system. If it's not sealed it will boil over.....?
