Title: What toys does my Omega feature?
Post by: WinRAR on 18 July 2011, 01:04:26
Hello.

I've recently purchased an Omega. I know it has nice equipment, but I don't know exactly what is in it. I'd like to ask you fellow forum mates some cuestions regarding this. I'll post some pics. They are from my cell phone (and, above it, I reduced them to 800x600), hence the poor quality.

First, what kind of mirrors do I have? Do they dim or are they regular mirrors?

The interior one looks like this:

It hangs from the black plastic box that holds rain sensor, if it matters.

I don't think they dim, because yesterday I drove in the evening with the sun on my tail and they didn't look darker. But then, what is the little rectangle under it? What purpose does it serve?

Second, what is this cockroach-looking thing?

It sits in the middle of the dashboard, almost touching the windshield:

Third, sun roof.

The sun roof has the roof itself, which opens, raises and closes electrically, and the sun shade beneath it. This sun shade opens electrically, but doesn't close automatically when I move the  rotary switch to the closed sun roof position.

Is it meant to open AND close electrically or it just opens and must be closed manually?

No more questions by the moment.

Best regards.

Your mirrors do look like auto dimming, but doubt the sun would make them work. direct light from a car behind would though, or just test it by shining a litlle light at it and see if the mirror dims.
as for the roach on the dash, a good insect killer should get rid of it. ;D ;D ;D
i believe thats the remote sensor!!  :y

the sunroof when it opens catches the "sun shade" and pulls it back but it doesnt do it when you close it you have to do it manually  :y

If it is the same as the ones I have had this will help you.
The sunroof sunshade opens automatically with the sunroof but has to be closed manually.
The bug on the dashboard I believe is the daylight sensor.
If it is a dimming mirror, and that applies only to the interior one, if you look into the top right corner of the mirror glass itself you should be able to see a tiny sensor with as wriggly line in it. The sensor detects high intensity headlights shining through your rear window that could blind you and so will then activate the mirror dimming function.
Hope that helps, but where is your handbook? There are some for sale in For Sale section, or was. :y

I think the auto dimming mirror only works with the lights switched on

Looks like you have rain sensing wipers - in the UK, these are only fitted with autodimming internal mirror. However, your mirror looks different to the UK ones, and I've not seen that type.  Could, of course, just be the LHD version looks nothing like the UK RHD version.

That is a solar sensor on the dash. Its used by the climate control to ascertain the strength of the sun, which is added to the calculations the climate does when heating/cooling the cabin. Facelift ones have 2 sensors in the same unit, to further refine the calculations to left and right sides of cabin.

The sunscreen, like virtually all cars with a glass sunroof, is manual.

Hope that helps :)

my early facelift elite has the dimming mirror but no rain sensing wipers :-?

Thank you all. This seems a great forum.

I tested the mirror and it indeed dims when a strong light hits the rectangle shaped thing below the mirror. My superhuman logical powers allowed me to conclude that it is the sensor. The mirror itself doesn't have any mark that I can see. Looks like a regular mirror. It also dims with engine and lights off.

As for the sun shade, I'm inmensely grateful to you. I was thinking that it was broken. The manual is not clear about it.

Next big thing would be fitting a Parrot with MP3 in the BOSE setup. I know that TheBoy has said countless times that it is impossible, but the electrics guy in my dad's workshop (official Opel service) said it can be done. I'll try to understand how he does it and post it.

Exterior mirrors don't seem to dim. Are they meant to do so?

What TB means is the rain-sensing wipers only come with the auto-dim mirror, you couldn't get them on their own (so if you have rain sensing wipers you must have an auto-dim mirror). But you could get the auto dim mirror on it's own, without the wipers..

Poverty Spec -> Auto Dim -> Auto Dim & Rain Sensing

WinRAR - the side mirrors don't dim AFAIK, at least not in the UK (LHD could be different, of course - they got electrically folding mirrors which we never got, for example)

The Parrott bypasses the amp and drives the speakers direct. Only it doesn't expect 2 ohm speakers, so impedence mismatches occur. Also, because the Bose amp gets bypassed, you lose all the useful functionality from the stereo (spoken satnav instructions, RDS Traffic etc), and you also lose the rear subs.

At best, it will sound sub-optimal, and you lose the stereo's features. At worse, eventually the impedence mismatches will cook the Parrott (cue, Monty Python dead parrot sketch ;D)

Yep. He talked about lowering levels or impedance or whatever from the Parrot.

This doesn't sound so good. Will a wired FM transmitter sound better?

Probably we should continue this in the electrical and audio forum  :-/

FM transmitters are OK-ish if you can find a spare frequency. However, on quiet pieces, you can hear static on every one I've tried.

Ok then. My mirrors don't fold electrically. The car got the plate on march 2003, so it must have been built in 2002. I remember reading that electrically folding mirrors came only in 2003.

We didn't get the folding mirrors at all in the UK, not even an option.

The 7th digit from the right of the VIN is the Model Year (MY), 3 = 2003, 2 = 2002

7th digit from the right is a "1". The dealer that sealed the book is none other than Opel Spain Motor Pool at Figueruelas. Opel's factory in Spain. The car must have been owned by a Opel boss or by a guy who knew someone working at the factory.

But seems to be model 2001.

Sorry, forgot to say, it was made in Russelsheim, Germany. All Omega-B's came from this factory.

Interestingly, this car came with a rear blind. UK spec models dropped the rear blind in 2002 :o

Oooooh, and ESP, and it looks like a LSD.

We always said our European friends got better specs than us in the UK ;D

Yes. In Figueruelas they made Corsas and now also Merivas. Every single Omega comes from Russelsheim.

But Opel employees seem to have a discount when purchasing Opel cars. The car was probably bought by someone working at the factory, either for himself or for another guy who wanted to save money when buying his car.

Yes. It has a rear blind. But it doesn't work  ::). Pressing the button on the dash only produces a clicking noise. Guys at dad's workplace will fix it in the following weeks.

Yes. It has ESP and not just TC. I hope the ESP light doesn't light very often. It's my first powerful (+200 hp is powerful for me) car and I must behave.

What means if the car is a LSD? Is it good? In cars context, of course. Avoid drug jokes  :P

LSD = Limited Slip Differential. A good thing.

Nope, no uk car had ESP. Elbows from arses not known is very common.  :)
