possible if he was running a 2.0 redtop......

plus the thing would be lighter than when it came out of the factory due to rust

A Mk I Astra with 1.8 OHC (8v) engine and minor modifications does 125mph, though this involves a 5-speed overdrive gearbox from a Cavalier (as opposed to the standard 'sports' gearbox that came with the Astra GTE where 5th was 1:1 and not overdrive), a long stretch of road, and fair wind. Don't ask me how I know. But the Mk I of the early eighties it was a far lighter car (700Kg) then modern-day Astras.

i can believe this as i had nearly 130mph out of my astra 1.8 eco sport(on a private track of course :))

with an XE or LET lump and the right gearbox 140 would be possible

it's at that speed you realise that if something goes wrong there is little chance of walking away from the accident

Speed doesn't kill. As we all know, rapid deceleration is what kills.  :y

Agreed. But as we all know, no one on this site (with more cylinders than doors  ;)) has ever tried to exploit the car's potential on a quiet motorway Autobahn

I seem to recall one of our trafpol once reaching 160+ in a Senator (on a training exercise?)

I personally think that if they have the right skills and experience, it's not much of a problem.

At the end of the day, they're acting in the public's best interest, and compared to these yobs who drive along at 130mph and film it on their phones, I'm sure with thier advanced driving skills the danger is minimal.

And yes, it's probably best he does get used to how the new car handles at high speeds at a quiet time, so he is better prepared for when he has to engage in a pursuit.

i just couldn't remember his name /speed.
Title: Re: Sure that wasn't km/h?

1. It is not as simple as that... even if speed itself is not the cause of an accident, or if the accident is the other party's fault, the higher your speed the worst off you, your passengers, and the occupants of the other car will be.... obviously no one is suggesting that cars should only travel at 10mph, but a balance need to be struck. And while we could debate if the limit should be set at 70mph or 100mph, there is no doubt that 160mph is inappropriate for public roads and poses unjustified risk to the travelling public...

2. While police are entitled to break the law when it comes to traffic, they still pose a risk. The risk is minimised by ensuring that Police drivers are properly trained and have good vehicles, but it is still there. This is why Police cars should only break the law when absolutely necessary to do so. Any case where this is done without due cause is potentially putting motorists at unnecessary risk.

oh and he did 84mph in a 30 zone, it really does make my p*ss boil that just cos he's an "advanced" driver and a copper it's ok to do them speeds >:(.

if i got my miggy up 159mph in similar conditons and got pulled, i wonder how far i'd get by saying i was "honing" my skills

1.8 16V, 2.0 16V or 2.0 8V  Astra would be able to do that speed out of the factory if you wind it up.

I think the only idiot who has tried to max out a car on here is probably me in our Shed of a Senator on the German Autobahn

just looking in the back of total vauxhall mag and the offical figures are..

mk1 astra gte:  116mph

mk3 astra sport 2.0 :  126mph

omega 2.5 v6:  139mph

Taking your hands off the wheel in this way is obviously bad enough on Motorway, even more so when speeding in 30mph area.

But for me this is not the worst bit.... the thing is that this guy has the mental age of a teen boy racer.... and with his judgement obviously being well below the mark, should he really be a Police Officer?

I would not normaly knock a police officer but this is crazy, he should get the sack and why in hell did these calls need a 'High Speed' responce. I think he presents as a boy racer usin any excuse to blue light it, I though blue lights were for emergency calls and I treat them with such respect when I see them when I am driving. Such flaunting is likely to undermine there use, after all we do no have to move over.
