Depends on your approach.  I like to explore the car, clean stuff up as I go and generally take my time.  I guess a couple of hours at that rate.

But there is no point doing the cam covers without cleaning out the breathers as well.  This takes just as long if not longer.  I recall taking a leisurely day over the whole job with plenty of tea breaks.

You could do it much quicker if you put your mind to it.  Darth Loo-Knee or Elite Pete would no doubt do it quicker yet, and probably pick up on other stuff we would miss.

It also depends how experienced a mechanic you are. This was the first job I did after discovering OOF about 4 years ago. It took me all day.

thing is (imo) i could spend 200 bucks for daz to do it and i aint wasting a day probably getting angry when things go wrong..... unless of course you enjoy mechanics  :y

If you can wait a couple of weeks I can give you a hand .. :) We're not back until the 15th

It took me  a full day the first time I did it .. mainly cos I screwed up and had to redo one side .. :( Now I would reckon a couple to 3 hours.... seem to recall when I helped Griffen do his (Devizes) we took around 4 hours, but I was a tad rotten .. I made him do most of the work .. :) also, IIRC, his breathers were a tad blocked .. so much so he had to pop out and buy more carb cleaner !!!

Thanks for the offer Entwood. I have to get it done over this next weekend as the better by half is going in to the hospital for a new Knee joint so things will be a bit hectic after the weekend.

First time, give yourself a day. Possible in under 3 hours, Inc breather clean, probably even 2hrs if you don't stop.

It's one of my least favourite jobs

Did mine last week following the guide on this forum, took me four hours and that was taking my time, including cleaning all the oil out of the spark plug wells(couldn't even see the tos of the plugs). Superb guide and forum.

Thanks joff. I shall probably do the job on friday.
the bits have just arrived. I'll have to do the breathers as well as there is a heck of a lot of oil around the back end of the cam covers. I hope its not too near the exhaust manifold.

Hey everybody,

question : is there any difference between Omega and Vectra x25xe cam covers? My Omega's camcover is made of plastic and I'd like to change it to a Vectra's metal one! Are they compatible? Can I use that one instead if this one?

Thanks for all answer

They will fit, although you'll have to fit the filler to the wrong side of the engine. The question is... Why? If the breathers are kept clean and the covers ate torqued correctly they won't leak ;)

If you do fit metal ones, keep on top of the breathers... The next weakest point if it pressurises is likely to be a camshaft seal ;)

I'm sure you mean the crank seal, Mr LD ;)

It is a myth that plastic ones warp (they have to be severely abused by a poor mechanic). The key is to use genuine gaskets and fit them correctly, then thery are good for years.

Well I've don the cam cover gaskets. Did the breathers too its taken all yesterday afternoon and till about 2.00 this arvo
Started her up and seems ok runs smoothly enough. I did find that one of the small breather pipes to the plenum was split and had come off the plenum altogether and the others all had the clips missing, fixed now though.
The passenger side cover was a right bu**er. after a lot of fiddling and farting about i got it on and felt underneath to make sure that the gasket was still in situ  not at all. Damn thing had fallen out so it  had to come off again. I put a few little blobs of black goo in the slot and it was ok the second time around.
Yes i did use the proper VX bits, thanks to Andy.
Thanks for all your help. I won,t be quite so nervous of the top end next time. :y :y :) :)

It's said that the cooling not so effective in case of cylinders in the middle as outsider ones. So plastic covers could be deformed or warped by thermo difference. Can it be correct?

I repeat, warping covers, if properly fitted, is a myth

I think The Boy, is right you can only tighten the down so much on to the posts. You are more likely to strip the brass thread than warp the cam covers.

mine on my old car were certainly warped to hell for some reason.

dodgy mechanic suspected :y
