My Omega still has the cannister type oil filter - can you only get the filters for these from the main dealer? Providing I can get the cover removed I think I'll stick with it rather than do the conversion. Does anyone know the cannister type filter Part No.?
I believe the screw on type oil filter is a Champion G102 or equivalent. :y

Halfords do em as well, more expensive than VX on trade, even with Halfords trade :y

I find the canister filters just as convenient as cartridge. Once you've got past the initial hurdle of getting the cover off they are fine with sensible tightening and frequent oil changes.

Same here.
Once I learned that it is advisable to unscrew the cap just far enough to let the oil drain out into a bowl, then pause, before removing the filter fully I found that there is less mess than there is with a spin on type filter.
What I did get wrong last time was that I smeared the O-ring and thread with grease before fitting. I think the grease may have attacked the O-ring because after about 2000 miles the cap started leaking. >:( I refitted the O-ring that came off the previous filter and it seems to have been OK since :-/

I find the best wat to remove the cannister is to use a 3/8 socket drive in the centre of the cap instead of trying to get a spanner or socket on the hexagon

I wouldn't do that if the cap is done up tight. People have split the cap doing as you describe.
Once the cap is turning freely it shouldn't do any harm.

Obviously care should be taken using this method if it is on too tight because some grease monkey has used a scaffolding pipe to tighten it. The first time you do a filter change will mean that you know it hasn't been over tightened for the next time :y

Like already said the Paper Insert type filter are fine aslong as the person who did the last oil change did not tighten its cap too 1000nm instead of the 15nm (which is stamped onto the cap itself)
It can result in you breaking the cap which Vauxhall (well ours anyway) do not stock.
