Title: Ignition barrel (not very technical questions)
Post by: Abiton on 03 February 2008, 21:38:47
Evening folks,

Just had a bit of a fun time with an ignition key that steadfastly refused to turn (steering lock on, just to add to the fun).  Nice AA man 'magicked' the whole assy off; and after much, much, fiddling and bashing I've got the key to turn and the lock barrel out of the main steering lock chunk.

I believe that will have saved a bunch of cash, but what price for a 90 038 193 (lock barrel) please folks, ballpark, no TC?
Local Vx is on the way to/from work, so no hassle to order one, but will want it to match door locks so I guess there may be a wait?
What documentation might they ask for, the car being my girlfriend's, not mine, but sharing an address?

Are they likely to sell me two new "head-sheary-offy" bolts separately to re-attach the whole shebang? I'm sure I can improvise something if not.

Thanks kind readers,  :)

Pete

We had that problem some years ago, AA man came out, believing we had nothing to loose he helped the Key with a set of mole grips. It was fine after that, carried a spare key and a set of mole grips for 3 years or so before getting rid of that paticular car.

I had a similar problem once the barrel started doing all sorts of bad stuff so I needed a new one spoke to my local VX dealer and they put me in touch which a company in Sunbury and they made me a barrel to fit my key and it only took about half an hour. Fitted it and never had a problem again.

I'll se if I can find the details of the company I used but I should think a little phoning around and googling and you'll find some one close to you.

the shear bols are available seperate, they ate a few quid a piece.

the lock can be done to key number, from memory the dealer will need the key number and payment in advance, it will take a few days to get as well.
Cost could be up to £40 :o plus the key they give you will most likely be the basic one, no chip or remote, it will be useful as an emergency key

Just been quoted £75!

Looks like key wear has been the problem (spare key better than daily-use one), plus the keys go further in than the 'correct' depth.  So a small tyrap per key to stop the keys going in too far, and a bit of a fettle-up on the tumblers and the barrel slot edges here we come...

Think I'll just use caphead bolts and maybe drill out the hexes to remount the steering lock.

Cheers for replies,

Pete
