Title: Still getting water loss
Post by: Varche on 19 August 2011, 15:02:33
A few weeks back, I started getting obvious water loss. Thought it was the HBV so changed that anyway. It wasn't.

One day I spotted water dripping from the front of the V6 engine below the bottom pulley. Hard to say where it was coming from. but had lost 1 and a half pints. Often but not always it can lose a pint after a 20 mile journey.

So far I haven't found where it is coming from and there is certainly no pattern. For example yesterday in temps of up to 39 deg C I did 20 miles, stopped , then another 40 miles on the motorway and stopped for an hour, another 10, brief stop and then back home. No water loss at all . No issues with temp guage though car loaded and going up hills it rises maybe 3 degs to 97. Normally runs at 94 which I don't see as a problem.

At first I thought it might be the water pump gasket seal but surely if so it would do it all the time? Other possibles thermostat trouble. Themostat transfer pipe sometimes sealing sometimes not? Oil cooler in the V issue.

Any suggestions?

I think you've got the likely suspects covered. Just a matter of finding out which.

If you can remove the plenum and intake manifold then pressurise the cooling system (block one of the throttle body coolant pipes and apply air pressure to the other - up to 1 BAR maximum) you might be able to see where it's leaking. If it's not visible around the thermostat or oil cooler cover plate, it's probably the water pump.

For your sake I hope it is not the same issue I had bit it sounds similar.  I changed the Hbv, pipes, thermostat, and I had already done the oil cooler.  Turned out to be a weaping head gasket coupled with a leak from one of the pipes I replaced where it hounded the back of the block.

I am fairly sure that is what was wrong with my 2.5 which has now gone to the scrap yard.

This water comes out of the front of the cam belt cover below the bottom pulley. I have a little used water pump off the other car which I could swap over to rule out water pump. Then it is off with the plenum.

Anyone know the part number of the two rubber ring seals on the thermostat transfer pipe please? Better get two new ones.......

My HG was weeping at the front.  It only became obvious when I took the cambelt back cover off.
