could be faulty wiper motor
or
wiper relay.
if it only does it on intermittent then ide guess its the motor itself.had a similar problem on a mk3 astra and a new motor cured it..

I'd disagree, if the wipers work on slow & fast but not intermittent, then I'd go for A N Other relay ......... easier & quicker to swap too.  ;) ;)

Andy think I wil run with relay at the moment, only have the Haynes manual at the moment which mentions relays but not which for which.  I assume thaat we are looking at the ones in the drop down section by the driver.  Going to a dealer tommorow to pick some bits up so could get a relay then.

This shows relay locations, I can't find the wiper relay for a 2.0  :-/ but it does show it as K8 for the 2/5/3.0 .......... I'd imagine them both to be similar. Try swapping with A N Other cos I'd expect a new relay to be a bit expensive as a test.

Slightly confused now, got the relay from a breaker but it seemed to be attached to its own relay holder attched to the wiper stalk, I droped the panel down to see if there was relay there and no relay.  two location marked with I think fron window and rear window with a wiper blade on them, the relay does not seem to fit.  If it is at end of stalk according to Haynes to remove the shroud, there are two screws that can only be accessed once steering wheel is removed.  A bit over the top but is it correct and where does the relay go.  helpppppppppppp

The relay is in the triangular box by the battery. Tall yellow one

Wel went to the triangle relay box and think I have fond the problem, no relay!!!! fitted one and it all seesm to work but wipers will need adjusting as they park in the vertical, hope it is a simple adjustment and not anything else.

Thanks to all who replied.

Ah! Now were getting somewhere. ;) If you remove the whole wiper assembly, be careful of the paint on the top of your driver's wing, you'll see an arm fixed to the taper/splined motor spindle. Slacken the M8 nut (13mm spanner) and move the arm back to between the marks on the ally casting ie >      <
Refit wiper assembly.  :y :y

Rob why would they be so far out? do you think that the asy might have been removed and not obthered to be set up correctly.

More like the wipers were frozen to the screen, wipers left switched on and stopped halfway across the screen when the engine was stopped.  ;) ;)

Well at last sorted, but what a battle, they were so far out the set up was miles out, adjusted from the wiper motor and alls well, so guess someone had a problem and whipped the relay out to make life easy.

Thanks for all contributions
