Title: TD Oil filter housing cap broken
Post by: SR-71 Blackbird on 20 August 2011, 21:42:31
Hi guys,

My plastic cap on the oil filter housing is broken, some of the plastic bits that forms the sides of the hexagon are snapped, why the heck did they make them out of plastic?!?!?!? What were they thinking? Does anyone know if the BMW ones are metal and if so where would I get one or does anyone know the part number of it? Thanks

I can imagine, over time mine have started to weaken and today as I was tightening it up it crack a bit and I think it will be a problem to get off and I will need a new one anyway. Can anyone help? I take it that its not a standard part but specific to the M51 engine so Omegas, BMW and Range rovers?

Not exessively the plastic bits were weakened anyway and I knew I would have to replace it at some point and now is the time  ::)

GM didn't chose the filter cap, BMW did.

Early ones (Vx, Landrover, BMW) had metal caps, later ones (again for all marques) had plastic ones.  They are not interchangable (without changing the entire housing and pump)

Should add, whilst it does occasionally happen, the plastic caps are not particularly problematic (if retarded monkeys at dealers don't act like pricks)

BMW part number is: 11422246171

The torque value for tightening these is quite low, and shown on the filter-cap.
I always use a 3/8" drive 'low profile' socket for this job.

Thanks TheBoy and Seth,

Ok great so would the BMW dealer be the best bet then? Anyone know roughly how much they might be? Its a bit tricky finding it on the internet at the moment.

In my experience, yes.

It would be worth trying your local Land Rover people too, as some parts for this engine have proven to be cheaper from them.

HTH ;)
