Just set off on holiday. Towing van from Lincoln to Pickering. Leaving M180 to go onto A15 towards Humber Bridge and car cut out with smoke coming from engine bay. It immediately restarted and pulled into Jet petrol station.
Popped bonnet to see smoke coming from gearbox breather.
Any advice or help gratefully welcome. :y
God we don't need this >:(

low oil ?

I wonder if low oil is leading to the remaining oil overheating as towing puts additional stress on the gearbox. If you can't get to check the oil level easily and MUST continue your trip, then slower speeds and as high a gear as possible .. treat it very gently......, combined with frequent stops to allow it to cool down MAY, just MAY, get you somewhere safe/sensible. However you are risking further damage if it is low oil/heat related. :(

Message from Tonka - I just want to say thanks for the help, carried on, no problems, even on hills. I will source the problem when I get home. :-/

Checked the box oil level on the 20th and found it to be spot on. The car pulled well in all of the gears and didn't misbehave anymore during our week away. Checked it again today (back home) and it is still okay.
All checks done with a hot engine and gearbox ;)
What it was up to I don't know. :-/ :-/
