The  same is happening to me, from several weeks by now. It seems that the sensor is faulty. But I've no ideea where it is located.

There is a level sensor the thing that looks like a mushroom inside your reservoir. They do give up mate which sounds like what yours has done. A new one from vauxhall are about £30, personally would not fit a secondhand one..

the sensor is in the bottle, its a simple float sensor, with a cold engine, stick your finger in the bottle and wiggle the float, sometimes sticks.

Otherwise just a new coolant bottle, they are only £30+vat and come with the sensor. They are also lovely clean & clear!

Hi, i have the same problem, what i would like to ask is can the hoses be clamped and the tank be drained (using syringe) then removed and replaced with a new one, antifreeze topped up and clamps removed (if done this way would the system need bleeding) or does the system have to be drained fully? Thanks

you could do it that way, or just take the bottom hose off the reservoir and drain the coolant into a container, and then tip it into the new reservoir. :y

Sounds like a lot of fuss! Head gasket / oil cooler failure is caused by poor coolant maintaince. Dump the coolant, put fresh in. What will it cost? £15?

Hi, looked at your How to: on coolant flush/change and looks easy enough so thats the way i will go, new tank and new coolant. Just one last thing is it safe to drain straight onto the road (dont have driveway or garage)? Thanks again for the advice.

No, its poisonous (deadly to cats in particular) and iilegal to allow it to run off somewhere where it could end up in the drainage system. Drain it into a container of some description until you can find a means of safe/legal disposal. ;)

I can just imagine the look of bewilderment on the faces on the lads at the local tip if I asked where I should leave my container of anti-freeze.  ;D ;D ;D

Not that I condone it, you understand, but know of someone who dug a large hole at the top of a hill towards the bottom of the garden, well away from watercourses, and poured it into there.  Then covered it over so tiddles couldn't get near it.   :-X

Wish I could get the local cats to drink mine then ... should I leave a dish of it out and hope ??? or add some tuna or chicken to tempt them ??

Am presently collecting half a carrier bag of cat shit off my gardens every week and I'm NOT impressed... bloody things don't even bury it now ... just shit and go leaving a mess and a stink.

:(

I know you dont mean that Nige, your far too civilised to do that. ;) ::)
The smell and sweet taste of antifreeze is irresistible to cats, and it kills them slowly and painfully when they drink it.
Best way to prevent cat crap in your garden is to get yourself a cat. They wont crap in their own garden and wont let other cats do so either. :y ;D

The smell and sweet taste of antifreeze is .....

Not applicable to Vauxhall's pink antifreeze. ;) It's the most foul, bitter tasting stuff I've ever tasted (next to Watney's Red Barrel  ;D)

There's a useful button on the end of the windscreen wiper stalk - it cancels the fault messages.

I've been getting the Coolant Level messages for a year or more, and repeated wiggling of the sensor top has failed to cure the problem.  Quite honestly, I'd rather live with the problem than invest the cash and time in fixing it.  Of course, on the day I get a hose failure, I'm totally b*****ed, but wotthehell...

For the first few years I had the car, the temperature gauge read a more or less constant 95o.  The last garage bodger but two did something or other to it to do with the cooling system, and the temperature varies a bit now.  Probably needs a new thermostat or something.  I'll live with that problem too.

I can vouch for that, my three little darlings wouldn't dream of soiling their own garden, they just go next door  ::)

My previous meg had the same from day bought, shorted out connector on bottom of reservoir (without draining or anything). When sold informed new owner to just check level by eye now and then like I had. Result
