I posted a couple of months ago about a knock from the rear of my estate and received several helpful replies suggesting rear shock absorber mountings etc.
I recently took a load of paving slabs to the local tip and the car was virtually silent all the way despite travelling over some very rough roads on the way but on the return trip the knocking noise was back.
A quick look in the tailgate confirmed that it was the trap door that covers the spare wheel moving about slightly causing the noise. Placing a blanket over the spare wheel and leaving the cover resting on it but not latched has stopped the knock completely, quiet car at last.
As the cover appears to be slightly distorted I can only assume that years of carrying heavy items such as jukeboxes in the back have bent it out of shape enough to cause the noise.

Shame you sorted it, three "Clunks" in a row and you win a prize! ::)
Goes to fetch coat . . .

Rule no1 when diagnosing noises. Take every thing out of the car, or make sure everything is held down. Loose spare wheel in saloons is another good one. :-[
Glad it's sorted, thanks for feedback. :y
