I am having problems with the car, it looks like an imobiliser problem. If I fitted a replacement main ECU and key, would the car start and drive?. Would I need to get the gearbox ECU programmed to it, or would it work in 'limp home' mode until programmed?
-
You would need a replacement engine ECU, Key fob transponders (you dont need the whole key) and the immobiliser ECU....all from a known good source and the same vehicle
The gearbox ecu etc requires no changes.
What makes you think its an immobiliser fault?

Hi Mark, there is another thread in the help wanted section about 'serious limp home mode... Basically what happens is when I put the key in and turn, the immobiliser and emissions symbols flash about 6 times, then stay on, and the car wouldn't start.

I would be inclined to get the codes read...

Hi, the initial code was P1740. The electrician didn't find anything new, and seemed convinced it was the imobiliser reader, which I went and bought, only after a bit of thinking, I recon its not, eg if the key bit were wrong, the imobiliser light would flash during churning, not at initial turning key to ignition. Anyone want to buy a new imobiliser reader?. I have given up, sorry but nearly 2 weeks without a car has stopped my work plans and totalled my earning capacity. I got it shipped down to the local Vaux dealer, Evans Halshaw in Dewsbury for an initial diagnosis for £65. We'll see what they say. i mean if it were bad fuel, I wouldn't know, but hopefully they would. Here's hopeing.

Is yours an auto, and are you getting any gearbox warnings?
-
yes its an auto, gearbox warnings?. The car drove fine, no problems. Very occasionally it wouldn't change up until the revs were nearly 6000rpm, but that has only happened a couple of times. If the gearbox got upset, could that stop the engine from starting?.

Just thinking that last time I saw the Torque Control codes, it was the gearbox saying to engine to reduce power. Usually comes up with a P0700 though.
If it is a 2.0 or 2.2 petrol, I would say double check cam sensor...

Just had the Vaux garage back on, they recon its the main ECU and want £650 to fix :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
I have managed to locate another ECU for a more reasonable £40, but unfortunately there is no key with it, so I can't just swap the ecu/reader/key. I have the car pass for my car but not for the scrap one. Its looks as if I am stuffed :'( :'( :'(
Is there any way of reprogramming a replacement main ECU with a different number ?

You should be able to program the new ECU to the old immobilser if that helps?
Though I doubt the ECU has failed, despite what dealer says...

Thanks for that. One thing Idid notice was that the switching line to the injector was sitting at 3.9v at ignition and when cranking. I didn't have a scope on it at the time, so I didn't see any switching pulses. I will maybe ask the dealer how much he wants to reprogram the new ECU, but I will make sure I have marked it before he gets it. Alternatively do you fancy a quick detour on your journey up to the Lakes?.

Alas, we will be pushed for time, and Cleakheaton is a bit too far off course :(. One of my female mates parents used to run a postoffice in Cleckheaton - the Moor End PO one, not far from the big roundabout... ...spent many a weekend drinking far too much around there ;D

OK, thanks anyway
