Title: Need Your Help In Choosing A Car..
Post by: madslug on 06 February 2008, 20:48:27
Hi Guys
Not a big poster but have been reading since getting my 98 3.0 Elite about a year ago,. Now she maybe for sale very shortly but before I can sell up i have the chance to get a lease car through work and I have narrowed my options down to 3. Any chance you could pick your fave of the 3 and tell me why..

1. Vauxhall Astra 2008 model 3 dr hatch 1.9d 120 Design
2. VW Golf 5dr 2008 model 1.9Tdi match
3. Honda Civic 2008 Model 5dr 2.2Ctdi SE

Looked at all 3 online and not a great deal beetween them, personally I like the looks of the Astra but hey looks aren't everything.

Cheers

Veccy C, with a manual box, and the 3.0 V6 Diesel.

EDIT - And bank the remaining 10k  ;)

I'd take the mileage instead, I don't like being told I have to have x car, I have only had one company car and that was a fiddle due to high mileages for work - I sold work my Carlton

I dont have to have a certain car, I can choose, but the monthly payments do need to be considered.
I also asked about a Mondeo but that was way more than these 3.
I either take a lease car with decent monthly payments or keep a 3 litre mega doing 22 to the gallon. (I do IT in our local schools and do not use main roads)

Exactly, I luv the look of the Astra, we all know VW engines are great and the Honda gets good write ups.

If I might add my two pence worth, I would go for the Honda or Vauxhall for 2 reasons.
More people are likely to be employed in the UK with either building or supplying parts for the Honda and Vauxhall.
Secondly from what I hear a VW is likely to spend a lot more time at the dealers.
Between the Honda and Vauxhall, it is a close call but would come down to, Honda's are driven by old people and Astra's are generally driven by slightly younger people.

Just my humble opinion.

In that class, have you considered the Ford Focus?

And, actually, whilst you're at it you should look at the equivalent Séat and Skóda models.

Then you'll have the full set to compare.

I had a Skoda Octavia a few months ago as a rental.

Better specced then the equivilent VW, excellent build quality and when i looked into the purchase price they were really good value for money

My view

The Astra is a good all rounder and not a bad power plant.

The Golf is the single most over rated thing out there and not as reliable as they once were (but then they had no features so nothing to go wrong). Ideal if you are shallow and buy badges......

The Civic is a good car, not as good as the last version though as it has been considerably cheapened and it shows, the loss of independent rear suspension has done nothing for handling. Not that great an engine either but very destinctive looks.

Well I have just been driving the civic diesel for the last couple of days.

I drive a VW diesel, and have driven the Astra many many times.

If it was me....

Well I would say not a chance for the VW. I completely agree with Marks comments.

The Astra is good, but I am not impressed with the seats.

The Honda is the smoothest and most refined drive. That engine is excellent. However the rear visibility is not good and the styling is not to everyones taste.

Took a trip to the dealers today and I think the Honda is winning, compared with the Astra & Golf the inside was amazing, loads of fetures. The golf was just boring although it had an iPod connector in the arm rest I haven't got an iPod so it's a pointless gimmick.
The Astra has a really smart shape to it but again the inside didn't do a great deal for me.

I recently was looking for a company car had to be diesel and under 16K.

My advise for what it's worth :

Get a Meriva Design XP with the 1.7 diesel and spec all the extras !

Comes to less than 16K, looks the dogs 'dangle berries' with the 17inch wheels and body kit, very practical and rather nippy & agile.

I'd go for the Honda not a bad looking car the other cars are also good but honda= Cheap Servicing, Reliable and the new civic is a good car.
