Faulty sensor
These often go, esp if coolant runs down the tank and knackers it.
Few things to try,
open the cap and 'jab' at the float, make sure it is free,
you could disconnect and clean the inside of the tank.
These may or may not help, best bet may be to buy a new tank and fit that.

You could just unplug the sensor, but it is a nice early warning of things like HBV on its way out.

The one in the wife's is currently unplugged, its nearly due cambelt and water pump, so when i drain it for that, it can have a new tank as well.

No worries, they can stick a bit.

now with my (now fixed) coolant leak, the float had a great workout, full up to full down daily!

Worth cleaning out the tank then, I imagine you have some grimey scaly stuff, normally a result of previous more maintenence...
