No, an aftermarket headunit should not affect the alarm system, the wiring for the radio is completely separate to any security systems installed on the car.

If your car already has an aftermarket unit fitted it should be quite easy to install a replacement (depending on how well the previous owner fitted it!). You will probably have to use the new mounting cage supplied with the new unit. The thing to remember with vauxhalls is that, even though the stereo wiring largely follows a standard system (connected on a multiblock), the permanent and switched live supply wires are swapped over, As I said, it shouldn't matter to you.

You might also want to consider, if the stereo doesn't work with the steering wheel controls to put an adaptor loom in place to get this working. Anyway, get it fitted as best you can then report back with any problems. You will probably want to fit a headunit that supports MP3, has inputs, etc.

All the best  :y

I just fitted a alpine double din unit today and it won't hold presets, settings ect is this down to the switch and permanent live being round the other way as the above post suggests?

Probably. Generally yellow & red.  ;)

Definitely Halfife  pin 8 is the negative ground earth, pin 7 is the permanent live and pin 4 is the switchable live with VX's even though its looks like a standard ISO harness - as David said they reverse the switched and perm live.

Ok so if I swap the battery live and the switched live over at the head unit end that would work?

The section of loom that they're supplied with normally have bullet connectors on the live & switched live so that you can easily swap them over.

Although you are right for 99.99999% of head units, there were some Pioneer stereos around 15 years ago that wired into the door pin switches - idea was, if the stereo was removed from its cage or power, it would trigger the car alarm system. Not many of them were ever wired up correctly, and even fewer have survived - but I mention it, as we got caught with this once trying to trace an alarm fault.

also some head units you have to move the fuse to the other postion instead of swapping wires  ;D

Generally for VW only though - moving the fuse does not swap the lives over, just keeps a  permenent feed to the head unit, and in a non-VW can cause other ignition related issues.
