I believe you need the proper radio to work the steering wheel controls :(

do they still do them?

Depending on the make of stereo fitted in your Omega this company may make a lead which will allow the use of the steering wheel controls

It is normally the slightly higher end aftermarket stereo's have this function, you then need an adaptor to make it work.
I have a pioneer aftermarket stereo, was about £160
then about £70 for an adaptor and I have the MID and steering controls all working.
Some of the other makes like sony or kenwood can work out cheaper.
If you let us know what stereo you have, may be able to advise further.

Steering adaptors are in two parts
One for the car

and then depending on which head unit, you will need the other bit - alpine shown for illustration only - most others readily available for the same price

All you need then is a stereo that is steering control compatable - and they can be from £80 upwards depending on what you are after.

As Dave (who knows a heck of a lot more on this subject than me!) says, you need 2 adaptors to do the whole job.
Don't go back to the original headunit, it will be a big step down in sound quality (unless it has a really naff "Soundlab" or other nasty cheap thing in there).
What unit do you have in the car right now?
