Couple of quick phone shots:
1) Camshaft coming out. note the spring has come out of the oil seal. (And it's easier to remove the sprocket before the cam!)

2) Sucking out a lifter with a valve griding stick:

3) State of the engine oil already, in my newly refurbished head...

And yes, I realised half way through I had no kitchen roll in the inlet ports ;D

bloody hell just realised something.... when i did the same on my project LPG, there was NO oil around the top of the lifters..... yours is swimming in it.
Might have explained the rough running ::)
They look a tad better than mine too! ;)

There should be a liberal amount of oil under the cam covers. The oil fed to the cam bearings and the lifters should just pee out and lubricate the cam lobes by splash before draining back to the crankcase.
If it was dry under there (and it had run relatively recently) it doesn't bode well.
I guess this is how a camshaft came to go rusty... ::)

But on the bright side.......the cam cover gaskets wont fail and pee oil into the plug wells :D ;D

Sadly, I saw lifter change and thought it was a 'coming out' thread!
