omega is back from its mot later today (700 quid repairs, ouch)
before we put it in though the battery light came on, which according to the manual is some kind of alternator fault. Could be to do with the fatc that we had just got a new battery costing 90 quid
any ideas what it could be and how to fix since after buying the car, insurance, tax, mot and stuff i really dont want more things to be buying

Light on usually means that the alternator is not producing enough power to cover the needs of the car.
When you got the new battery was it because it was going flat? ie not enough power to start car etc. Did anyone check the output of the alternator before they sold you the battery? as a duff alternator will lead to a flat battery

Check the following carefully whilst the engine is running... but take care ....
1. Connections to battery and alternator for heating up, if this occurs you have bad connections that are causing high resistance.
2. Use a multimeter and check the voltage at the battery and at the alternator output, they should be the same and a minimum of 13.8 v .. up to around 14.5 v is good
As prevously said .. looks like you've been sold a battery when your alterrnator may be fubared :(

well the car had been sitting on the guys drive whom we bought it from for a whilse so they had to charge the battery for us. On journey back dad reckons the lights wernt on (or he didnt notice it). The next day the car wouldnt start, all other gajets worked though (although a moving car is quite an important gajet) so we assumed it was the battery. God new one, installed it, which was harder than on previous cars due to a stupidly fiddly clamp underneath hoses. Then aparantly the light came on.
But the light isnt as bright as other dashboard ones like the fogs. Its only bought half as powerfull

My battery light came on one day and after getting a new one fitted
it was still on, turned out the alternator was getting a bad ground through the bolts that attached it to the engine and I made up a large guage ground wire for it. Worked a treat.

okie i know this is gonna osund REAL stupid but where is the alternator in the car?
the manual didnt come with a engine bay diagram. stupid people.
How much could a new alternator, fitted cost?
becuase mot cost 700 quid in total. Needed new brake discs, shoes, pads and cable
exhaust parts
fog light switch
windscreen wash servo
If only his gordenness haddnt taken 100 in VAT

What car do you drive? Might be better if you update your profile to mention this as well. What you drive, where you live etc etc

1994 omega 2.5 td estate, select.
and i will put pics up when the cars beewn cleaned since its awfully shaded. previous owner cant have cleaned it often

Can supply you will a good alternator from a 95 Omega Elite (assuming there is nothing different about the TD alternators??) For £50 delivered...where do you live?
The alternator (basing this on the v6) can clearly be seen at the front left bottom of the engine...its one of the components that is driven by the auxilliary belt...

Tractor alternator is top right looking from front. I believe the tractor one is different to others.
I may have one in garage somewhere
