Post by: theolodian on 07 February 2008, 21:33:18
. . . that you need a 1/4" drive set to do the DIS!  PITA!

It's been 2.5 hrs and I still don't have the DIS out.  2 of the bolts are really stiff, probably rusted.  The right size 3/8" drive socket doesn't fit between the bolt and the body of the DIS.  I only have a screwdriver-type handle for 1/4" drive.  Even with a wrench on it I can't get the other 2 bolts loose!

I do have the plenum out.

A 'Tunnie' is equally useful in these situations....

If you have a rounded bolt head can you not tap a slightly smaller socket onto it, then get it to turn?

Not in this instance.

You need a 1/4" drive E10, 4-5" extension, and a long 1/4" drive ratchet or breaker bar.  A universal joint and another extension wouldn't be a bad idea.

I had to take the plenum off to see what was going on.  If you haven't done that before then look into all of the issues that go with doing that the first time.

If I can't finish it quickly tomorrow, then it is going to be left outside in a very risky area.  If it's still there at the end of next week then I'll give it another shot.  :-?

Thanks for the info, mines only a 2.0L will I still encounter such dificulties?

The story continues . . .

. . . apparently they don't make the E10 in 1/4" drive, or at least no one has ever seen one.  >:(

I got one more bolt out with a better 8mm socket, still have one more to go though.  :'(

Prybar on standby.  :-/

Plank across the engine with me sat in the middle allowed for best access

Well, that sorta explains it.  Resorted to the prybar and tore it out.  Wish I had done that last night, but didn't have prybar at the time.  It's completely breaked!  Rotted out, plates all spread apart with rust, just gone!  :o

One bolt is still in there.  Need to get pliers in there or something.  Then it's on its way back together . . .  :y

I got fooled by it being so badly designed in terms of installation that I didn't think to look for little numbers.  ::)

TBH this is the first time that I have had to repair a wasted spark ignition system.  Never done a dizzy cap that had numbers printed on it . . .  :P :D

I think so, was replaced shortly before I bought it. Then there was the flood last summer that killed my starter motor . . .  ::) :(
