I have a '95 Elite estate which has the stubby roof mounted aerial on the roof (and the grotty HRW aerial for the radio :() which is well known is for a Telephone setup of some sort. My question is, what is this unit and is fitted as standard and what's involved? I was looking through the Haynes manual and noticed three distinct modules, the microphone, telephone and handset in the wiring diagrams but no mention of it anywhere in the manual as such. Just wondered what it's all about as I'd like to fit a handsfree for my mobile and wondered if any of this could be used.

Personally I would ignore anything that was originally fitted as it will be hopelessly out of date.
If you want hands free, you have 2 real choices.
1. Parrot kit. CK3200 in particular. Around £90
Easy to fit, and very good sound quality. No cutting of wires, just plugs into the loom.
2. Good quality hands free bluetooth headset.
Best on the market is the Jawbone. Around £70
Amazing noise cancelling system means people hear your voice and nothing else around you.
I have one and it is astonishing.

You forget Nokia's own CK-7W - just need unit, button, and mic, (assuming you have prewired loom, around £20 from ebay, around 10mins to fit (just did on tractor, though I used autolead rather than soldering direct on loom). Being (older school) Nokia, it does what it says on tin :y
Note, if you use Windows PPC Phone edition 2003, often bluetooth voicetag dialling will not work due to bluetooth stack.

Unfortunately not 'cos that's where I'm putting mine :y When I had the sunroof control panel out to fit a roof aerial (ah, radio reception at last, bliss ;D) I found a pair of wires terminating in a plug which I found in the Haynes manual to be the microphone wires for the built in handsfree which prompted this whole thread! I just wondered what it was all about but as has been said, a; it'll be yonks out of date (Bluetooth? What's that) and b; a newer recognised kit's going to be so much better. Job done.

PS Mind you my CARK-91's are getting a little old in the tooth now. Hurrah for Nokia's adaptor cable :)

Never been impressed with the cark91 converters. Second hand ck 7w control units with mic and control button can be had for less than £20 ;)

Yeah but when you've got a few kicking about :y I've got one in my works van, one in my Monza, one in a 7.5 tonner....! The thing is I like a handsfree kit with the phone in a cradle so it'll charge and I can see who's ringing and whether I want to answer it or not ;D (I think the newer kits will support a cradle but I've already got the Cark91's!)

Newer kits have optional cradles, you pick the one for your Nokia phone - a better idea...

If you have the old Cark91 (The best carkit Nokia ever made) you can buy a CA55 Cable that will convert it to pop port to run some of the later phones / pop port cradles or a bluetooth convertor cable which unfortunately is about the same cost as buying a brand new CK7W....
I completely agree about having the phone in a fixed cradle that charges the phone and provides antenna connection (Again Cark 91 better as it had a direct connection rather than passive). Also the phone has to be in a fixed cradle under the current law.
