Post by: seamusmcmad on 12 May 2008, 13:21:33
Well more than happy with my new mig, but radio reception is quite crackly and a pain in the arse to be honest. Is there anything that can be done to improve reception??? Would be nice if i knew where the rather aerial was too!!
Any help greatly appreciated.  :y

Saloon? It's in your heated rear screen elements. The amplifier is on the rear parcel shelf under the cover...... somewhere.

I tried changing the aerial amp, didn't make a blind bit of difference! Put a roof aerial on in the end, got all the reception I could wish for now :y

PS Was funny though, with the standard roof aerial kit that I bought the cable was long enough to get half way down the A pillar!!!

Brilliant News - we always put an external aerial on Omegas when they come in here. I would have mentioned it earlier, but I always get shot down by others telling me how good their own reception is instead of assisting to cure the fault.

Nice to hear you`ve cracked it though !   :y

A roof aerial is not a job that some would wish to tackle as it involves drilling a hole in the roof which is always a bit of a leap in faith ;D It's a doddle though, really. Pop out the sunroof control panel, and there's loads of room in there. Drill the hole about midway between the windscreen trim and the edge of the sunroof (in the middle of the car, obviously!!!) and then you can get your mits to the thread inside the car no probs. Remove the A pillar trim with a bit of jiggery pokkery, threadle the cable across the roof lining from the hole where the sunroof control panel was, pulling the lining down a bit at the A pillar end so that you can get hold of the cable. Cable tie the aerial cable with the other cables down the inside of the A pillar. It's probably easier to continue with the glove box and the trim behind it out (the one above your feet) by threadling the cable down the gap at the bottom of the A pillar between the dashboard, probably by pushing some stiff wire down first and pulling the aerial cable down with it. The worst bit is getting the cable into the back of the radio. I took the radio right out (obviously!) and released the whole heater control panel a bit so that I could see down the back of the radio orifice! It is possible again with a little patience and some stiff wire to pull the aerial cable through.

Voila, job done :y I fitted one to all of the Monza's I had/worked on and I think they look quite smart. Certainly different, and of course you get good reception :)

And just as easy to fit at the rear of most cars if you pop out the rear courtesy light for access

Well yes, there is that I suppose :y I must admit I looked into replacing the bee sting type aerial of the existing phone aerial which I have on my car ('95) but you need a very upright style of aerial not the usual highly swept bee sting 'cos the tailgate will wallop it if not ;D Plus I didn't fancy fiddling a cable across the roof lining. Horses for courses!

As a general rule, if looking for replacement aftermarket aerials, the swept back trendy beesting aerials are usually VW and the more upright ones are Audi. Either will fit the Vauxhall.
