A pal of mine asked me to go with him to look at an Omega that was advertised for sale in the local paper, a 99 2.5td CD mini-facelift manual. it was in good cosmetic condition and only 49,000 miles on the clock but when i drove it i found the engine very tired (even for the BMW lump it was poor) and the suspension was very "wallowie" and soft. it had all the hallmarks of a high mileage car, drivers seatbelt slow to retract, worn pedal rubbers, stone marks on the bonnet but with less that half the mileage it should have. no service history or NCT (irish DOE) cert which would have the mileage at the last test.
my question is, can the odometer be tampered with on the Omega? i though cos it was the old dials it would be more tamper proof that the digi odometer. all the numbers line up like they should or am i being to paranoid.
its sale price is very good, almost too good.

I would have said so as well? Any thumbprints around/inside the glass or knurled heads on screws?

You just said it was wallowy, tired, knackered seatbelts, worn out though!?! Sounds like a dog to me.
I wouldn't be taken in by the mileage, it sounds very dodgy indeed. Hang on for an even better, more honest bargain :y

My friend was uber impressed by my chipped 2.5 TD and this was the first one for sale he could find. i checked the screw heads around the steering cowling, the plastic caps were missing but the screws looked ok, i know theres more screws behind vents but i couldnt go yanking them out.
the engine was so clean you could eat your dinner off it, just smells like a rat to me :( :(

I think you've answered your own question to be honest!
To put it in perspective, one of ours has 130K on it and hasn't got any wear to pedal rubbers. Why hasn't it got service history then? Don't like the sound of that, The Boy is always on about having the oil changed regularly so there should be at least some paperwork! Did you say it doesn't have it's equivalent of an MOT? Surely it's no good to drive then? Is the gear lever worn? These are difficult to replace. Also our 46k seats feel like new.
As said, I'd be tempted to walk away and look for something, even with more miles but with a reputable seller :y There aren't really many used low mileage diesels around though!
-
yep, no test on it.
ive never seen one with such low mileage, im holding him back from buying it, i wanted to check if its easy to clock the mileage first.
2.5 td's are rare in ireland and dont come up for sale too often.

Hi
You've described it as a bit of a dog. The actual mileage covered is totally irrelevant. Its a dog, don't buy it.

In these situations your first impression counts for everything. Go with your instinct.

It is possible to check your cars MOT history including mileage/s via the web . Is it not possible to do this with an NCT?

Playing with the odometer is a general habit here..
I'm sure they also played with that omega..Stay away..

Dont know TBH, clocking of cars is a big problem here. even if the vehicle went for a test with mileage less than the previous test its not an issue and the current mileage displayed goes on the cert (2 year test over here)
going on what members are saying i thing it give this lump a miss.
thanks lads. :y

Couldn't agree more, I've driven cars that have done 180k and they are fine, I've also driven cars that have done 35k of being abused and they are ready for the scrap heap. Remember, its all about maintainance, not mileage.

It may of had the entire clocks unit changed.......for a lower mileage one, from a scrappy.......far easier than messing with the milometer. About a 10min job to change the clocks.
-
Why would you not put a MOT/NCT on a car with only 49K? That's way too fishy.
-
you have to go with the feeling you get from the car.
I tend not to look at mileage but instead the car, when we go for a drive i ask the owner to drive the car for a few miles, i want to see how they treat the car, this again gives me an idea of what i could be buying into.
Mine has now done 150,000 and when you look over it you would be hard pushed to find signs that it has done that, yes the steering wheel and pedals are worn and the S on the sports button had vanished, but that is it.
if your heart is saying No then that's what you have got to go with :y

Omega is very easy to clock, and to be honest, an awful lot of them probably are.
UK stats are 1 in 4 cars are clocked.
Cars like Omega that 'wear well' are prime candidates.
When I bought the MV6, I was looking for a 5yr old one, non plod, auto, MV6 or Elite. Of the dozen or so I looked at, my MV6 seemed to be the only genuine one.... ....some I proved to be clocked.

Quite right. The seats wear very well also.

to rise this back to the top, is it possible to read true odometer mileage with a tech2 (even a cheapo one) :question
