Title: Variable wiper stalk upgrade
Post by: alexandjen on 23 July 2008, 22:05:49
Decided it would be good to have variable flick wipe on my 2001 CDX so set about buying a stalk and relay.

Went to fit it this evening and the plug for the computer controls is completely different.

The original one has a four pin plug using 3 terminals and the replacement has a six pin plug using 5 terminals.

Now is there an actual stalk available which will just plug and play with the correct plug fitted or is a bit of rewiring required?

no is the simple answer....

However someone in the past worked out how to fit a variable stalk to a later car, i believe it involved fitting a resistor but i can't remember 100%

I think you'll find that the "extra" terminals/pins are for the feeds to the MID ... ??  The ones that change the displayed values and reset them.

I have bought an older variable wiper stalk to go on mine .. same sort of problem .. I think it is a matter of working out which pins do what and making up a connector.. I haven't sdecided yet if I really want a stalk with irrelevant S and R buttons, so the project is on the back burner for now .. :)

.......

I'm sure there's an add on kit to make your wipers rain sensitive?
andyc is the man to ask.

Both stalks have got S and R buttons for MID it's just the connector/amount of cables exiting the stalk which is a problem, seem to have two extra on the replacement.

noooooooo! On a 2.2 CDX? Elites have a different windscreen with self dipping rear view mirror and some sort of sensor to make the rain sensitive bit work. That would be one hell of a mod!

....it does work very well though  :P

It might very well be built ito an Elite's screen but a man in the know has told me that there is an add on kit that can be fitted. I got a price from him for maybe fitting to SWMBO's Astra G. The price has instantly been erased from my mind - it was that expensive. But as I said .... I'm sure there's an add on kit to make your wipers rain sensitive?

Perhaps I should've more acertive and not said 'sure'

Yes, from a facelift fitted with SatNav. The Elites have variable wipers with no buttons on the end as they don't have a MID. I got mine from an Elite as part of the Sat Nav upgrade. I still had to cut and solder one of the connectors but that was it, no extra relays or resisiters just one wire cut and re-connected.

Yes, and also the versions with TID (the-most-basic- screen). I've got one, variable speed without S and R buttons... Sorry, but I don't know anything about the connectors etc on mine...

Hi (new poster here)  I added an alternative relay (in the position of the standard wiper relay, under the bonnet) that allows variable intermittant wipe by storing the time interval between operating the wipers.  IIRC the relay was from Volkswagen - I did find it a little difficult to source.

This was an easy (10mins to fit) and fairly cheap, about £12 for the relay.
