Title: Flash Guard Vs Check Control
Post by: Entwood on 30 August 2008, 22:23:51
Trying to sort out a few very minor glitches with the towbar electrics - nowt drastic just minor annoyances - the kit and instructions came from Germany as it is a 13 pin system. Came with all the bits for "Flash Guard" wiring, but there are little oddities that don't tie in ....

The instructions give 2 options, "Flash Guard" or "Check Control" both of which use additional relays ... I was wondering.. does anyone know how I can tell which system I have ...I'm starting to think that I may have the wrong "extra" bits and should really have the "Check Control" bits

Any one know how to tell which I have ??

I know sod all about pikey stuff, but as the car has check control, that would be my thought.

Hopefully, a fellow pikey will know though  :-/

pikey wagon wiring has nowt to do with it .. but if you say my car has Check Control I'll buy the Check Control bit - part No 90 513 262 - and try that instead of the "Flash Guard" bit I have ...

many thanks  :)

"Check control" (assuming it's the bulb failure indication on the MID) only operates on the trailer brake lights and requires an additional bulb failure sensor behind and to the left of the glove compartment. The brake lights are then wired directly to the connection on the towing break-out connector in the boot.

The indicator warning requires a 4 - pin flasher unit to be substituted and an additional bulb behind the relevant icon on the instrument panel. The indicators then need directly wiring to the towing break-out connector.

Yopu shouldn't need any relays in addition to this unless for the auxiliary charging / fridge circuits. The car is designed to drive the trailer lights directly not through relays.

Thanks for that Kevin .. unfortunately this loom does not use the breakout towing connection at all :(

I'll bring the instructions to Newent, but I think I'll buy what appears to be the missing bit anyway, maybe then the little annoyances will go away .. :)

I'm fully legal to tow, it's not a major problem, I just want it right .. :)
