Title: Fuzzy sounding speakers
Post by: DaveyDavey on 18 September 2008, 12:13:00
Noticed this morning that there's a slight crackling/fuzzy sound coming from one of the speakers on the passenger side of the car. Is one of my speakers on the way out?

The car is totally standard as far as I am aware.

Almost certainly to be the speaker packing up.

The cause is usually the voice coil of the speaker having overheated due to either playing very loudly, or more often by turning up the bass to a level / frequency that the speaker cannot maintain for long periods of time, and this causes the resin on the copper windings to boil and expand over time causing the overall diameter of the voice coil to get slightly larger to the point that it starts to rub against the side of the speaker magnet internally. This is indicated at a fairly early stage by "cracking" and "popping" from the speakers as they are no longer allowed to move freely in and out. If this is allowed to get any worse, the speaker may sieze completely and burn out, often resulting in the failure of the head units internal amplifier.

If you suspect a speaker is crackling - change it now !!!!

Thanks Dave, a little more detailed a reply than I was after but it's always good to know why things are going pear shaped.  :y

I think it's the one in the passenger door, so will have a listen later on and then get the tape measure out so I know what size it is.

Unless you got Bose they are all the same as one another...back speakers are slightly smaller than the front ones...

Thanks for the offer MC, but I might take this opportunity to upgrade the speakers and it's a good excuse to get myself a head unit that will play MP3s too.
