Title: EML - big ideas and Keyfobs...
Post by: sev on 08 October 2008, 20:20:07
Right, when I bought my 2.5, it came with a couple of keys, and infra-red keyfobs separate.

One of the keys had a light and what looked like a button in the centre.

Nowe I assumed this to be one of those old school keyhole illuminator jobees as the IR fobs were separate, and it looked far too thin to be anything else. Also the battery was dead.

So I had a brain wave, i'll cut the slot out of the IR fit the key from the thin with button fob, and then i'll have the IR keyfob all in one rather than two dangly things.

All was fine, apart from when I went to fit the key onto the car ignition barrell.

With my new frakenstein keyfob the EML flashes and the car just turns over but won't start!

With the other key it starts fine.  However, with the bastardised key fob I used to be able to start the car... obviously before I butchered it.
(had to attack the back of it with a dremel!)

Now, I don't mind as I have a key and two I/R fobs - but all I wanted was it all on one convenient arrangement  :-/

So just for my own curiosity, what did I do?  I know I fooked up somewhere, it would just be nice to know what?

didi you remove the key blade from the old key head?

If so i womder if you left the transponder chip in there, the car is not seeing it in the key and so flashing the EML.

The transponder chip will look like a little rectangle of black carbon, about 5mm by 10 mm

Thanks Jay, I wondered what that little black jobee thing was, I've see one in the IR fob, but i'll look in the other keyfob.

However, I have the black dome on the sunroof shroud so that means that my central locking is IR.

I'm missing something here aren't I  :-/

the eml light usually flashes like that to say theres a problem with the immobiliser so if you left the transponder chip in the main bit of the key then it wont start

if IR type, it won't have transponder.  But fact eml flashes - i thought that only happened on rf fobs  :-/

spose the other way to find out whats wrong is get the key and keyfob that work-start the car

and then look at each part and see whats missing

Interesting!

I took apart the non anything key - with the separate IR fob.

Even though it doesn't contain any electronics, it does have the transponder!

On the fob which I butchered there was, thinking back the little 'loose bit of plastic'.

Meaning if I've managed to peice the jigsaw together and reading some ancient post on here that even though the central locking mechanism is IR, the immobiliser still needs to read a transponder to allow the engine to start.

Perhaps the later RF models just read the one signal?

However, at least I know that my immobiliser is working!  :y

So I suppose the next step is to fork out for a carpass as I don't have one, and buy a replacement key as i've gloriously trolleyed mine!

Looking at the VPC however, all the separate fobs were deleted and up-issued to an integrated IR fob with cut key and trasponder.

Thanks to you all for helping me work it all out!  :y

...if you cant tell by looking at it stand well away from the car ideally above sunroof height and then see if it unlocks as an ir beem would be blocked and/or would be too far away (say about 10 yards)

Definitely IR.

The fob only unlocks the doors when it's within eyeshot of the sensor on the sunroof panel - I practically have to be about two feet away from the car or else it won't open.
