Title: xenon bulbs?
Post by: mathewst on 06 April 2009, 13:13:03
Can anyone explain a little the difference between xenon bulbs?
And I mean real xenon bulbs not the crap they H1 H4 etc filled with xenon glass.
I have no experience with them and never changed it but looking to buy some spares of ebay just in case.
This is one of the links found on ebay

http://global.ebay.com/2x_D2S_D2R_XENON_BRENNER_ERSATZLAMPE_BIRNE_OPEL_Omega/200327465338/item

I know ordinary bulbs are road legal if they're 55/60 watts, but these xenon are confusing a little because they are marked by temp in Kelvins.
Also on this link there are two different bulbs (different mounting)
and I have no idea which ones fit omega facelifts (2000 model).
If anyone can explain the markings of xenon bulbs and suggest any good ebay link please do.
Thanks in advance

Its D2S you want.

I got mine from autobulbsdirect

some people have had real grief with ebay ones, mine have been fine.

They dont tend to 'go' often, so I wouldnt keep them 'in stock' just in case.

The original ones are 4300K - a yellowy light
most ebay are 6000K or higher. 6000 is bluey white
8000 is purpley

5000 is about the best in illumination, the higher the temp the worse the illumination (but they look more showy)

Thanks JimBob, you've been very helpfull as usual.
I have no idea what my xenon bulb number is but the illumination is lousy, so I know what to look for next time.

One more question if maybe you know.
Is it worth replacing the main beam and position light bulbs with those osram nightbreakers or something similar?
Actually will the color be similar?
The car looks a bit funny with xenon dipped beam lights and ordinary (yellow) other bulbs.

I bought a pair off ebay, I haven't used them yet so can't comment what they are like.

I would say yes

Sidelights are my pet hate, I have good quality white led ones, which colour match quite well.  I would get the xenon filled ordinary bulbs next time, there are a few out there now.

Are you sure its not the beam aim that is wrong?

If you do change them, be gentle, easy to snap the self levelling arms  :-[

The beam is wrong actually on one light.
Tried everything on the forum except checking the level motor.
And it looks like I cannot adjust it manually because tried that even and it doesn't move not a single milimeter.
I guess I'll have to buy a new motor but plan to buy a diagnostic software first to be sure ("My Naff Code Reader")

"My Naff Code Reader" will show you all the light live data, and allow you to excercise the motors  :y

Do you know of any guide for "My Naff Code Reader" except that for the imobiliser?
Just wondering do any instructions or a manual come on cd when you buy it from ebay?

And on that note, no more discussions please.  I'm sure the proper one, you'll get the support required from the manufacturer's agents...

Could be a duff bulb....had the same thing on the estate.

Bulb changed and beam correct pattern....sounds odd but maybe swap the bulb and check.
