Well foggy today - hate
Motorists who drive on sidelights or no lights at all - saw both this morning
Tw8ts who keep their rear fogs on when your just behind them - seems like about 60% of motorists are tw8ts!
Idiots that drive at 2mph and keep braking when its safe to drive somewhat faster
Feel better now i've had my moan :y
-
Had to follow a tractor through 2 towns b/c too foggy to pass. >:(
Yes, saw an idiot in a big Jag with no lights on whatsoever. Many BMW's have dim rear fogs thankfully, since they're always on. ::)

I must be a Tw*t then, cos when its foggy i have my fogs ON..........BE SEEN, not rear ended. I dont turn off my fogs when cars approach from the rear, ;) if you turned them off everytime a vehicle approached you would be forever pressing the button.

Rear fog lights cause more problems than they solve... all they do is mask the brake lights and create loads of glare >:(
If people can't see you with your headlights/tail lights on, then they're probably going to hit a wall/tree/other non-illuminated object anyway. I'd be quite happy to have NO fog lights on any cars, maybe that way people will drive a little more appropriately to the conditions. They seem to get by just fine without them in Japan, the US, and countless other countries.

Exactly right, but its not the fog lights that are the problem its the dippys that dont drive according to road conditions.

the reason I ask this:
here happen too many accidents in the night time from these lights
as every driver thinks its their way ;D
but seriously my room mate had big accident 2 days ago, from that reason..

Is it possible that if the rear fog lights are blinding you, you are too close to the car in front? ;)

Yes bad driving is the key problem, but how exactly do fog lights offer any help at all? They are the same brightness as brake lights, so you get a wall of red light in front of you the whole time. Without them when you see bright red lights ahead on the motorway you can pretty safely assume the cars several hundred metres in front have started braking, and back off (or prepare to back off) accordingly. With them you don't actually realise the cars in front are doing an emergency stop until you realise the cars are actually slowing down -- which almost negates the point of having brake lights at all >:(
Personally I think they're an absolutely stupid design that adds nothing to road safety but causes plenty of problems. Consequently I never use the damn things, headlights go on in any kind of precipitation including fog, and by some miracle no-one has run into me yet ::)
-
I have no problem with fog lights used in accordance with the highway code:
You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).
The sad thing is, most motorists switch their fog lights on at the slightest hint of fog or rain, or even darkness, when vis. is still 1/2 a mile or more, and then leave them on. In this case they are counter productive, especially as they are normally now integrated into the light cluster with the brake lights rather than separated horizontally and vertically from them.
I use them on the occasions when it is so poor that I am worried about someone coming up behind me and not seeing my tail lights in time and I turn them off when someone is established behind me at a safe distance and speed, so they notice my brake lights. I certainly haven't used the rear fogs on the Omega since I've had it (a year) so this doesn't happen that often.
I don't see it as a problem to turn them on and off as required. We do the same with the main beams and indicators, after all.
To answer cem, our traffic lights are always active, day and night. I hate to think what would happen if they weren't. :o

Once again Kev has it spot on ...
Rear fogs are a useful TOOL .. not the be-all and end-all... used CORRECTLY ( 100m or less visibility) they are extremely good .. used badly .. they are useless, but they don't turn themselves on and off, it is the idiot driver who does that ... so don't blame the inanimate object .. blame the prat person behind the wheel.
:)

Yes..They absolutely must be active..Else many accidents happen..
But I'm curious why here the officials use flashing style after 12 PM..

I got shouted down by someone who said that any safety item is a good thing .... or words to that effect. Personally I'd remove rear fogs from all bloody cars for the reasons given above. Piece of p*** to reach your arm out to turn the bugger off when someone comes up behind!!
-
Problem is, people don't think through what's going on. To them it's "the button I press when it's getting a bit foggy". They don't consider that it's affecting the guy following them.
It's not the only area where if you fit too many safety devices you start causing accidents.

I don't have a problem with rear fog lights when used correctly, it's when people put them on in town, at night, when it is raining but otherwise clear.
Side lights should be banned for use when driving, some are useless from the front. imho
Foggy yesterday going to work, country road, quite thick fog but you could see to drive. Saw a black shape coming toward me, underneath was a little grey sports car, no lights at all. What are some drivers thinking.
:)

Omegas with their yellowish inboard side lights are next to useless on their own, & I saw a Micra the other day on side lights .... just! :o
The dim-dip system of the early 90's was a very good idea, you couldn't drive on just side lights, but seemed to die a death.

You know, with all this "clever technology" in cars, why can't they make things useful?. I use Fog lights when its a bit thick and there is a danger of people runing into the back of me, there are still lots of pillocks who will drive along motorways at stupid speeds when they can't see 30ft in front of them. If we had a sensible car control system (CAN Bus ?), you could only enable fog lights at past 45mph, so stopping the clowns who drive through towns with the damn things on.
I think the basic problem is the intellegence of the driver. You get these people who have somehow passed their test, and regard driving as a waste of 45mins on their way to work. They have no consideration for other drivers AT ALL, and may turn on fog lights, but are unaware off the effect on other drivers, and so forget about them.
Perhaps we should introduce an "intellegence Test" for driving, and make people resit their test whenever buying a new car. Now that would stop the clowns !!!. Or would it ?. Companies like BMW, Merc. Audi, rely on drivers with more money than sense to buy their products, so they will cater for anything that seems to make their buyers life easier. This cocoons the driver in a nice pretty plastic box, and he/she is unaware of other drivers.
Hence the 'headless chickens' I see when ever there is an accident on the M621. Everyone slows down to look at the flashing light and the damaged car, then speeds up. No reason for slowing down, but they want to look.
You can see where its heading, anti collision radar, and who needs a driver?. Cars under completely automatic control heading up the motorways, following algorithims programmed by Microsoft. Oh Shit :-X :-X :-X :-X Time to leave the country, pronto :-X
I hope this is all the product of 3 4 cans of "Old Speckheld Hen" and not the future but..............................

No place for rear fog lights. As said they're confused with brake lights & at best cause glare to those behind you. Sorry but i strongly disagree with these. If everyone drove according to road conditions there would be no need for these gimmicks. I'm on the road all day, not just to & from work, shops, school etc.
Many people put them on when it's raining!!! That's all you need with wipers going & spray everywhere, just chuck some glare into the equasion. Think that part of the dashboard should be re-named the "pillock button" ::)

Exactly right - you do not have to be driving too close for rear fogs to be an issue!
