Title: ABS/TC ECU repair - how to open it !
Post by: kevpuk on 02 June 2009, 12:09:54
So my replacement ECU seems to be dtingy (boo !!) and so I figured it is time to try to fix it (and the other one !)

Pretty sure I saw a photo from someone (Marks DTM Calib ??) on the internals of one of these, showing the ribbon connector to be the usual damaged part.....

Question is, how does one open these units up - properly ! - so that it can be repaired and put back together correctly ?

It looks to me like a square plastic lid comes off the module just below the main loom connector. - Or at least there were signs of this having been re-sealed on the recond one I fitted yesterday.

No idea how it's best removed without damage. I had a feeling the repair was a very small gold wire running onto a substrate with some semiconductor devices on, so probably not easy without a microscope.

Hmm, well sounds a little daunting :(
Still, won't really know until opened one up, I suppose.....and then there is finding someone to remove and replace (the chap who did it for me last time is not so keen to do it again, and I failed miserably - Doh !!)

Yep. It's a real fun job, but Ok with the right tools. A selection of Torx screwdriver bits and a 90 degree drive for them is the key. Oh, and lots of patience. ::)

Eeek ! SO now my Power Steering has died too (whenever the ABS/TC lights are on, which is 90%).....Booo !
Guess this is related ? Sure I read somewhere that the power steering can be affected by this ECU failure (but not sure how !!)...?  :-X

Power steering is speed sensitive on the omega... gets lighter the faster you go..... and gets its information via the ABS ECU .. so when that fails the power steering defaults to its "heaviest" setting.

Yeah, I saw the picture.....my father is planning to take a look at the one currently on the car (retired electronics engineer and a dab hand at this sort of thing...) - the one that was originally on the car and replaced a few months back is on it's way to repairers (went with these guys (http://www.ecutesting.com/)) so will hopefully get working unit back quickly :) Forced into my Toledo T Sport (not all bad !!) in the meantime, but that is more of a go kart than comfy cruiser :(

That he maybe but, without a microscope, a very fine bit soldering iron and some silver sodler, he will not succeed (note, he was in the same trade as I am in!)

Well the good news is the repairers called this morning to say all fixed (hybrid lead failure) and it will be with me Monday/Tuesday :)
So we can then look how it was opened/sealed and set to work on the spare !
Realise that it may be tricky, but never say never :D
