Title: Aerial Cable
Post by: swamp rat on 24 May 2009, 16:51:42
Hi guys,
Anybody any ideas on this one. I've had crap radio reception on the current Omega as long as I've had it. Eventually decided to sort it out. Checked the connection at the radio - no probs. Changed aerial amp for one I knew worked - no improvement. The plug for the cable going forward was quite corroded, so cut it off and soldered the wires straight on to the amp circuit board - still no improvement. So, now I've taken off the driver's kick plate to check the other connection and there isn't one. The cable around the connection is burnt right through. It's even melted a circle in the carpet. Now the repair is easy - I'll run new cables from the head unit all the way back to the amp - I'll be on to the items wanted board next to get genuine cables with the correct connections, but anybody know what could have caused the heat in the aerial cable. It's not powered is it, so why get hot. All of the other cables running through the footwell are unmarked, so the heat has only been in this cable. I would like to know before I put in new cable, in case it can happen again.

It might have been the previous owner, doing another repair and damaged the cable. is there anything in the near that could cause any heat for that type of damage?

Hi Ghost Driver,
That's an idea. Nothing else around shows any damage or could carry heat. I think I'll lift the carpet and have a look. The cable was touching the carpet, so maybe had a water leak in the past or maybe somebody welding underneath or something. Maybe I'll just redo the cable and keep an eye on it afterwards.

if there are no other signs of burnt areas or cabels then I would not worry about it.

I picked up a connector from a scrappy and used that it is possible to take it apart and reconnect the wiring it is a bit fiddly as the center conductor on the lead is very thin and very easy to break while stripping back  :y
