hey guys im about to start my build on the omega.
Where have you guys run your power cable are there any gromits on the car big enough to take 0AWG ?
cheers
-
I don`t think I`ve ever seen a car yet that would take 0wg without drilling a hole in the bulkhead?
General concensus seems to be to have a look behind the pollen filter though, on the passenger side
;)

standard wire guage is something I've never got my head around ..... what outside diameter is 0 wg? :-[ ..... and what's the A bit, never heard/seen it expressed like that. :-/

I`ve seen it quoted as "wg" and "awg" but do not know the difference either, It could be something like American terminology, Vs old school british engineer speak?
Anyway, the smaller the number, the larger the cable.
4awg is half the size of 2awg, 8awg is half the size of 4awg - get the idea?
0Awg is the largest that is available (off the shelf) in the car audio sector, and is aroudn the thickness of your thumb. Heavier gauge cable is available, but is exceptionally expensive.
When you start getting into full on pro-competition car audio systems, heavy cables such as this is essential.
;)
-
your right it stands for american wire guage :D
you can get in the audio market 4/0 which is 4 over 0AWG that stuff is thick
is it safe to drill behind the pollen filter dont want to chop any think important lol
im also considering running under the car and in to the spare wheel well

Ah! 17 years of selling the stuff, and thats the first time I`ve heard an explanation - thanks !!

4/0 ? very thick, very heavy, doesnt bend, and you need a second mortgauge if you buy a 18m roll (that hurt!) - don`t even try running that through the car - outside only.
0awg is generally run through the car, but choose your route carefully - I would avoid running underneath the car if you can due to the associated problems in ever grounding the car on speed bumps, and corrosion resulting from the number of screws and brackets drilled into the floorpan to support the cable
Obviously check either side of any panels before taking a drill to them.

How big?!!!! :o :o
Each phase of shore supply to a Grey Funnel Liner wasn't much bigger than that!!! ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

yes, but some people take car audio to the extremes
http://www.dndservices.co.uk/htmls/flash_htmls/projects/project_hrv.htm
And to fully understand how severe these systems are, check out the third picture down on the left of this link. You will see a crumpled speaker. That speaker has a metal cone, and the terminals came loose whilst testing it. the sheer pressure inside the car from the others caused it to buckle.

I think it'd be wasted on me for listening to Ken Bruce & Steve Wright!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Not at all - you are the perfect potential customer for this.
if you are old enough to be listening to them, then you are old enough for your hearing to be deteriorating due to your age -
and therefore, you need a much louder stereo to compensate for that
;D :P

Here you go:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_wire_gauge
0AWG = 53.5 mm2 :o
Ideal if you want a couple of electric showers in the back of your car. ;)

Thats not the diameter, lol, you could run a machine shop with something that big, its more like 9mm with the insulation.
If you don't mind running it down the drivers side there is a large plastic grommet that is blank, or there is on the facelift, you can easily drill a hole it that and run it inside the car, you will need more than 5 metres though

Er . . No, I think you may be confusing this with the normal 8awg cable that people fit for conventional car amplifiers - The 0awg we have here with insulation is around 23mm diameter !!
;)
-
Well it must have one hell of a lot of insulation then as the core is just over 8mm, lol, I just had a look, its about 16mm with the insulation, it will still go through the grommet on the drivers side

I don`t know what size cable you are looking at, but its a lot smaller than 0 Awg
Sounds like 4awg to me ? :-/
-
lol there will be more current draw than a pair of electric showers i will have around 1000amps at peak :D

What setup are you planning? Sounds interesting?

Translates:
He says he knows what he is doing, and has the makings of a very serious full on competition system.
:D
Please keep us posted with progress on that one. There are not many on this forum who will understand what you are doing, and I think that some pictures as you go along would generate some very good interest and a major talking point.
:y
On a personal and professional note, if you need any help or assistance, give me a yell - I have a lot of experience of this. Biggest I`ve helped with so far was 64x12" in the Pioneer Transit.
8-)
-
the monster truck pioneer van with a guy called kam ?
you may also know ian pinder ? hes a fellow competitior
il post up a build log as it unfolds or folds together il have post up my port folio of previous installs
-
Yes, I know Kam very well - used to live down the road from me, and Ian Pinder has been over to my place as well on a few occasions over the years !
Say hi to them from me if you see them :y
Not sure how long you`ve been on the scene, but if you are familiar with the LOUD! Association a good few years back, I was heavily involved with that from day one with Sid Jervis.
-
il pass on the hellos i have been in the lanes for 6 years now i think its now run by a darren millard he taken over db drag uk not sure how long he has been doing it
its a small world in the uk audio industry :)
-
I`ve been competing since 1992, and after breaking many records (and windscreens), stopped around 2001 ish and spent more time on the technical sides of things and demo / show cars rather than out and out grunt.

Small World ? I`d say more inbred than redneck hillbillies !!
;D
