Title: change from auto to manual head lights leveling
Post by: espen22 on 27 August 2009, 23:11:52
Hi anyone knows if it is possible to change from auto leveling to manual leveling on the xenon headlights?
Thinking of fitting the manual adjustment and disconnecting the sensors on the wheels...

Anyone done this? the sensors are breaking down each year because it is not made for snow/cold weather, and now the price is gone up to 300£ for a new one.

I'm not sure it's possible(definitely it wouldn't be an easy job) but you can always find sensors here from the breakers for 20 t0 30 pounds

dont think the ecu would be happy...

having looked at live data its constantly monitoring.

I reckon you could set them into one position using resistors to keep ecu happy, but dont think you could get manual levelling.

the uk appears to have (reluctantly - the uk would ban hids altogether if it could) followed eu laws, so guess Norway similar to ours, which makes autolevelling a legal requirement

If you get the "manual" levellers from normal headlights and fit them to your xenons then they will work with a normal headlight switch which has the manual adjustment control with appropriate wiring.

The issues then becomes the wiring to join it all up and of course the MOT/legal side of things.

Or, ask some of the guys selling parts if they have a damaged set of normal headlights that they could remove the levellers from. They may also be able to give you the plug in connector for the car which is different with Xenons (it looks the same but has a different number of pins). You will then need a new headlight switch - from them as well.

Yes its in norway a legal requirement, its 3 points in that law, and i guess its the same for all the EU and EU restricted countries,
Points in the law are:
- Auto leveling
- High pressure wash system on the lights
- Approved reflecting system marked with ECE approval.
When this is said, i will point that this is not my car, it belongs to a guy who asked me about this and i think he is at less irritation/disturbance for the meeting traffic if he can adjust the lights.
Now he drives around with a defective system that is put in the position he thinks give him the best light :)
The only thing he dont like is the warning bulb in the instrument, but he will take out that bulb he says...

But i will tell him that he should start importing the sensors from the UK, and hopfully he will do that:)
