Title: Congestion Charge
Post by: Markjay on 15 February 2008, 13:23:26
New Congestion Charge for Londoners from October 2008...

Cars up to 120g/km CO2 are exempt.

Cars from 121 to 225 pay 'standard' charge of £8

cars from 225 upwards pay £25, but only if registered after 1 March 2001.

Alternative Fuel cars (i.e. Hybrid and Gas) are no longer automatically exempt, instead they will have to pay liken everyone else based on CO2 emissions.

There is however something to slightly sweeten the pill  for those who just bought new a Prius, any alternative fuel car registered with TFL prior to October 2008 will continue to benefit from charge exemption until January 2010 provided the car did not change ownership.

Now both my cars are above the 225 limit, but while one is R98 so will keep paying £8, sadly the Omega was registered in June 2001 so will attract the £25 charge...

My options are to wither sell it and get an older Omega (e.g. a nice 3.0L x-reg facelift), or buy a newer small car.

The wonders of Mr. Livingston... if I sell my 2.6L car and buy an older one with a 3.0 L engine I pay the lower Congestion Charge  :o

but either way my 2001 Omega will have to go  :'(

watch the 'for sale' section  ;)

What about my 2000 registered Westfield on a "Q" plate that doesn't even have a cat, crankcase and fuel tank both vented to the atmosphere?  [smiley=evil.gif]

There's an option for you....

I can see a revival in classic V8 powered cars if this keeps up. ;)

Until they ban them completely. >:(

Nope. He probably won't allow it into his "Low Emission Zone".

Actually, I recall someone (TVR owners club or Pistonheads IIRC) doing a procession past his house a few years ago - or at least talking about it. :-/

Many years ago i remember that prat livingstone saying  that " IF I EVER GET INTO A POSTION OF POWER IN LONDON I WILL  MAKE SURE THAT CAR DRIVERS WILL SUFFER FOR THE POLLUTION THAT THEY CAUSE TO THIS CITY" >:(  and as he said it a bus passed behind the said prat and he dissapeared in a cloud of soot from a smelly dirty and old red bus. Boy did i laugh ;D and did he look a compleat tit. Sadly that tit is in a positon of power now but hopefully not for too long.

when he ran the glc,he was called the loony left because of his extreme policies, most of his extreme policies are now implemented nation wide and accepted as the norm and give it 10 years congestion charging will apply to almost everyone on every road who isnt a pssenger on a bus! >:(

I think that this forthcoming emission tax is a real bitter pill, of course for people in Marks position where the extra cost means the difference between owing a car he clearly values and all that means (really active knowlegable member of this forum that benefits us all, a strong social element through this forum in owning his omega, sense of pride and achievement in owning and maintaining a classic car).
All of the above are truly worth a lot in these days of overpriced bland tin boxes.

Given the above sentiments there may be a temporary upside albiet not for Mark (although I hope he can reconsider) - you may find more omegas coming on the market which may bring new members - probably people for who the emissions tax will not have such a drastic effect, this may also bring more donor omegas on the market to keep the cherished car market supplied.

I love my motor and while I can afford it I will not change the best when viewed from a 'Bang for Buck' 'Toys for Boys' and sheer 'affordable luxury' car I have ever owned.

I don't think anyone can sleep easy over this. Today London, tomorrow - who knows?

I'm so glad that I never need to drive into London despite living on the outskirts. When I do need to it's always by train and tube.

I agree with Kevin - the writing is on the wall for all higher emission cars where ever they live.

BUT as I said until I can't I will.
