"Heads" is the Bog.
My dad used to be a Clyde Pilot, and I've seen him park 100,000 ton tankers without scratching the paintwork!. The inertia once you get them going is amazing, a crash stop, from full ahead to full reverse, the ship takes about 15 mins to stop. So if you are sailing in front of a tanker, get out the way !. Steam gives way to sail , no chance!.

My Dad was in the RN during the war - and taught me all I know (its his fault!), but none of that sounds familiar.
Shame he passed away 8yrs ago, as I'm sure this thread would have brought back memories for him. He didn't marry Mum until he was 39, and we know next to nothing about his Navy days. Every time we quizzed him on his 'previous life' we just got that 'knowing smile' ;D
