Ok put this in electrical as I need to know about the electric side of things on the drivers seat.
I need to replace the drivers seat on my 03 plate 2.2 CD. Would there be any issues with the airbag in the seat if I disconnect the electrics, or for that matter anthing else in there. Read on here that it's best to disconnect the battery to stop the airbag warning light coming on, then have to reset it.
I take it disconnecting the battery I will only have to put the code back into the radio when reconnecting, is that all?
Cheers
Mick

if the battery is disconnected for the duration of the swap, then it should be fine.
then just radio to reset, and one touch open / close on windows.

Remember to observe airbag precautions though !
After disconnecting battery - wait for 1 hour before unplugging the seat (or any other) airbag as this give the unit time to discharge
Once all back together there shouldn`t be any need to reset the airbag light providing the battery has been disconnected throughout the duration.

I thought it was 1 minute dave to wait for capacitors to discharge, but could be wrong. :y

Er . . . No !!
1 minute and the airbags will probably deploy (all of them, not just the one you are working on)
Most handbooks advise 15~30 mins - my advice would be to make a cup of tea and wait one hour - better safe than sorry.

Cheers for that, will take your advice.

Never have waited more than a couple of minutes after disconnecting to be honest, never had one go off :)

GM docs on this system state 1m - the components go into a 'safe' mode where they discharge themselves.
Call me a wimp, but I always go for cuppa after discon battery though ;D

I`ve seen too many go off at various Audio installers who also thought that a few minutes was enough - And I felt for the guy who removed a headrest from a Volvo and tripped a total of 11 airbags and side curtains in doing so.
Whilst we are on the subject, it IS possible to remove an airbag and replace it with an appropriate value resistor in its place, but NEVER NEVER NEVER try to measure the resistance of a disconnected airbag with a multimeter to try and work it out, as it WILL trigger.

The ones that don't trigger (and not all do nowadays), give false readings anyway, as the component places a (almost) short across itself to discharge itself. This seems to be the case for the Siemens ones that Vauxhall seem to prefer...

But Dave DND is right, unless you are 110% sure you fully understand the system, defo errr on the side of caution - if one deploys, your backside will chew through the gusset of your smalls.
Those that know me will know that even when running diags on cars, I always leave the car when interrogating airbag ecus with cheap code readers ::)

There speaks a man who:
a) has never chewed his pants up his backside
or
b) too daft to feel the aftermath
I'm hoping a) is the answer ;D

Ok another question about airbags (in the seat)
I've got a spare seat, so the airbag electrical connection has been disconnection a while now.
Do I have anything to fear (it going off) if I remove it altogether from the side of the seat back. I want to take off the seat back fabric covering, and the airbag is stopping me doing this. Seems only 3 screws holding it from the inside.
Anyone done this, there is an "how to" about removing the seat covering, but I believe that one doesn't have an airbag.

There is always a risk, but just be carefull not to stand in front of the airbag whilst removing it, and basically be carefull of what you are taking apart. No problems unbolting the airbag from the frame, but dont ever try to dismantle the aibag unit itself.
Also, when putting the removed airbag to one side, ALWAYS place an airbag with the bag UPWARDS never place an airbag face down. This is so if it goes off, you only get a ballon, not a missile shooring across the workshop.
