Title: Headlight failure
Post by: BigAl on 20 November 2009, 19:46:14
Hi Guys
A few nights ago  the left main beam did not come on and the display showed "headlight tail lamp" or "headlight tail lamp" can't remember which one  :-[
so i assumed that the bulb had gone, however when i got back in the car about a hour later , the light was working fine and the warning message had gone !
Is this an indication that the bulb is on its way out or is it a sign of a more expensive failure ?

Do you have hids? If so what colour is the light from the bulb? Anything slightly pink would indicate a bulb problem. Failing to light sometimes could be either bulb or ballast. You would have to swap ballast over to check which has the fault.

Sorry, ignore all that. Just reread and it is main that failed so no hid. In which case its odd for a filament to not work sometimes, may just be loose connector on the bulb.

Yes

In 6 years of Omega ownership (so far) every bulb failure has been preceded by an apparent false alarm.

If you check all your bulbs you will almost certainly find one that is blackened and about to fail properly.

If you give it a week it will save you the bother and it will be obvious which one needs changing  :y

Fairy 'nough - what are the recommended replacements - I vaguely remember reading posts about nightstalkers?

I had this message pop up a few weeks ago, thought it was strange so checked everything and nothing had blown, since then it hasn'r re-appeared, bought a spare bulb kit just in case

I used to get false warnings in very cold weather. Changed all the bulbs to GM ones, problem went away.

You've lost me here Mr T, why would one of the other bulbs make the left main beam not work :-?

Nightbreakers vary in batch quality, as do any Halfords Brilliance.  The best upgrades for consistent quality, light pattern and longevity are the Philips Xtremes-highly recommended and worth the money  :y

Nothing unusual as such in a lamp with a failed filament to suddently start working again.

Failed filament takes a "shock" of some description while power is applied, broken filament momentarily makes circuit again, sudden inrush of current creates enough heat to "solder" filament ends together, lamp works again.

Granted it won't work for long, but it does happen.
