Title: New Depo HID units
Post by: Turk on 25 November 2009, 23:27:04
I've been trawling e-bay for a pair of reasonably priced non-HID headlights for my F/lift Mig. My mate runs a breakers and said he's sure he had a brand new pair in stock. I called over today and yep, brand new, still in the box with the cellophane wrapping untouched and even better, as they had been ordered in for someone that never came to collect, I could have them for cost price. Brand new pair for £126.50  :y ...then I noticed the words Xenon on the box  :(  I need the standard jobbies.
If anyones interested I'm posting photos etc in the "for sale" section. He says OOFers can have them for the same price.

Surely the only difference is the lamps and balasts, standard lamps should fit and work as normal.

Tried a H1 bulb and it seemed to fit but then it dawned on me...no wiring on that side. HID wiring runs from the ballast pack.

What I do have is a spare set of Hella std h/lights that I have dismantled with the intention of fixing the adjusters, but they are totaly fubar.

I was wondering whether the Hella H1 projector unit  would swap over with the Depo jobbies.
Anyone know ?
For the wiring it's just a case of swapping that over as well.

I have looked at paper work that came with mine and it says that you can change the bulb holder, there is a screw that hold it on,. :y

Yeah, that's what I reckon too. Spoke to Steve at the Heathrow breakers and he seems to think Depo and Hella projectors are compatible too. So that's 3 of us so far. Just about to start now.
If they're not compatible... er, we'll blame STMO !! :y

So far so good. The projector unit are compatible.
All I now have to do is swap over the wiring...and that's where I've hit a wall.
How do I remove the round socket in the back of the unit. It is loose when the wiring is wiggled, but just won't come out.
Any ideas ?

When I fitted DEPO's in my early Omega I considered swapping the original wiring over (because the DEPO sockets aren't very good) but I couldn't immediately see a way of getting the sockets out.

After I had fitted the new lights I pulled the old ones apart to see how they were put together. The sockets can be removed without damage but I didn't take photos and I cannot remember exactly how. I think I had to squeeze some barbs in on the inside of the headlight unit....

Yeah, there's something holding them in, but I just can't work out what.
Ah well, I'll see what happens in Round 2 tomorrow evening

they are cliped in on the in side, it is a pull to clip in, and need a flat screw driver to pop it off, allso have to be carefull as it in the dip and the corners are weak, can crack the case. :y
is it the pas side as mine was the same with movment, used some lock glue to fix it not supper glue as it can eat the plastic,, worked ok then, allso got some new rubbers for the plugs think they were £1 at vx centre. :y

I'm converting new Depo HID's lamps to standard H1. The projector unit fits fine, now I just need to swap the wiring over, but getting both the Depo and the O/E Hella sockets loose is just not happening. They both move a few millimetres when pushed, but that is it.

There was another thread on here describing how to warm the goo holding the lens on in order to dismantle a headlight.

if you took one of your old ones apart to see how the socket is retained you might be able to extract the other 3 working by touch? (I think the clips are on the inside of the headlight)

The original Hella and replacement Depo headlights have been completely dismantled and the projectors swapped. Just trying to remove and swap over the darned sockets and looms now.

Right, finished at last. Wiring loom sockets can be removed by using something slightly smaller than the I.D of the socket housing as a drift and tapping them out gently and when the won't move any further, one slighty firmer tap and out they come. Refitting is a push-fit.
Anyhoo, finished the conversion, will  probably fit to car on Sunday.

No worries, I still don't know if it is the correct way, but it's certainly the quickest.  ::)
I got hacked off with it moving back and fore and getting nowhere so...if  in doubt, give it a clout  :y
